Battery Not Charging
Various Electric Bike
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E-bike battery not charging is usually caused by a charger issue, dirty contacts, or a BMS lockout from deep discharge. Check the charger LED, clean the battery contacts, and try a different outlet.
Affected Models
- Rad Power Bikes
- Lectric XP
- Aventon
- Trek e-bikes
- Most e-bikes with removable batteries
Common Causes
- Charger not outputting power (check LED)
- Battery contacts dirty or corroded
- BMS locked from over-discharge
- Battery temperature too high or too low
- Charger port on the battery damaged
- Battery end of life
How to Fix It
-
Check the charger LED.
Most chargers show green when plugged into wall only, red when actively charging. If it stays green when connected to the battery, the battery is not accepting charge.
-
Clean the battery contacts.
Wipe the metal contacts on both the battery and the bike frame with a dry cloth. Corrosion prevents charging.
-
Try charging off the bike.
Remove the battery and charge it directly using the charger port on the battery. This bypasses the bike's wiring.
-
If stored for months: leave plugged in for 4+ hours.
A deeply discharged BMS may take hours to recover. Some chargers will not show active charging until the BMS resets.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an e-bike battery last?
500-1000 charge cycles before capacity drops to 80%. That is typically 3-5 years of regular use.
Should I store the battery fully charged?
No. Store at 40-60% charge in a cool, dry place. Full charge or empty storage accelerates battery degradation.
