Pedal Assist Not Working
Various Electric Bike
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Pedal Assist System (PAS) not working means the motor is not engaging when you pedal. The PAS sensor, its magnet disc, or the cable connection may be the issue. Check the PAS sensor gap and cable first.
Affected Models
- Rad Power Bikes
- Lectric XP
- Aventon
- Trek e-bikes
- Most e-bikes with pedal assist
Common Causes
- PAS sensor cable disconnected
- PAS magnet disc misaligned
- PAS level set to 0 (off)
- Controller not receiving PAS signal
- PAS sensor failed
How to Fix It
-
Check that PAS level is not set to 0.
Use the display + button to increase PAS level. Level 0 means no assist.
-
Check the PAS sensor near the crank.
The PAS sensor sits near the bottom bracket with a magnet disc on the crank spindle. Make sure the disc spins freely and passes close to the sensor.
-
Check the PAS sensor cable.
Follow the cable from the sensor to the controller. Make sure it is plugged in and not damaged.
-
Clean the PAS sensor and magnet disc.
Dirt or rust can prevent the sensor from reading the magnets.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PAS and throttle?
PAS: motor assists only when you pedal. Throttle: motor runs when you press the thumb throttle, no pedaling needed. Some e-bikes have both.
How does PAS know I am pedaling?
A magnet disc with 6-12 magnets rotates with the crank. The PAS sensor detects the passing magnets and tells the controller you are pedaling.
