What Does This Error Mean?

E-bike walk assist not working is usually caused by not holding the button long enough, or the feature being disabled in the controller settings. Walk mode requires a press-and-hold — a short tap does nothing on most systems.

Common Causes

  • Button not held long enough — walk assist requires a press-and-hold of 2–3 seconds
  • Walk assist mode disabled in the bike controller or display settings
  • Bike set to an assist level that is incompatible with walk mode activation
  • Walk assist speed capped by local regulations at 6 km/h (3.7 mph)
  • Motor or sensor fault preventing any motor engagement at walk speed

How to Fix It

  1. Press and hold the walk assist button.

    On most e-bikes, walk assist requires pressing and holding the dedicated walk button (often labeled with a walking figure or the letter W) for 2–3 seconds. The motor should engage slowly at 3–6 km/h. Releasing the button stops walk assist immediately — keep it held while pushing.

  2. Enable walk mode in the display settings.

    Some e-bike controllers allow walk mode to be enabled or disabled in the settings menu. Navigate through your bike's display settings and look for a Walk Mode or Push Assist option. Enable it if it is set to Off.

  3. Switch to the lowest assist level.

    Walk assist may only be available when the bike is set to Eco or Level 1 assist mode. Switch to the lowest assist level on the display and retry the walk assist button. Ensure the bike is fully powered on before pressing.

  4. Check the display for an error code.

    If pressing the walk assist button shows an error code on the display, note the number and look it up for your specific brand. Some error codes (typically motor or sensor faults) prevent all motor functions including walk assist.

  5. Check the button for physical faults.

    If the button feels sticky, gritty, or physically unresponsive, it may have moisture ingress or physical damage. Clean around the button with a damp cloth and compressed air. If the button produces no physical click or tactile feedback, it may need replacement.

If holding the walk assist button causes an error code or the motor makes a noise but does not move the bike, a motor sensor or controller fault may need diagnosis at an e-bike service shop.
