Firmware Update Failed
Segway-Ninebot Electric Scooter
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Segway-Ninebot firmware update failed usually means the Bluetooth connection dropped mid-update, the battery was too low to complete the update, or the phone was too far from the scooter. Most failed updates leave the scooter in its previous firmware version and it will continue to operate normally.
Affected Models
- Ninebot KickScooter MAX G30
- Ninebot KickScooter MAX G2
- Ninebot KickScooter E2 / F2 / P65
- Segway Ninebot ES2 / ES4
Common Causes
- Bluetooth connection dropped during the update transfer
- Scooter battery below 50% — firmware updates should only be started at 70%+ charge
- Phone moved out of Bluetooth range during the update process
- Phone screen locked or app moved to background, interrupting the transfer
- Corrupted download from Segway servers — poor Wi-Fi on the phone during download
How to Fix It
-
Restart the scooter and check normal function first.
Power the scooter off completely and back on. Test that all functions (motor, display, lights) work normally. Most failed updates simply leave the old firmware in place — the scooter continues to operate on the previous version.
-
Charge the battery to at least 70% before retrying.
A low battery is the most common cause of update failure. If the battery drops below a threshold during the update, the process aborts. Charge fully and retry — do not start an update below 50% charge.
-
Keep the phone within 1 metre of the scooter during the update.
Firmware is transferred over Bluetooth. Any signal interruption aborts the update. Sit next to the scooter, keep the phone unlocked and the app in the foreground, and do not use other Bluetooth devices simultaneously.
-
Disable phone auto-lock before starting the update.
If the phone screen locks during the transfer, most phones suspend Bluetooth activity and the update fails. Go to phone Settings → Display → Screen Timeout and set it to 5+ minutes before starting the firmware update.
-
Force-close and reopen the app, then retry the update.
Close the Segway-Ninebot app completely, reopen it, and navigate to your scooter → Firmware Update. The app will re-download the firmware if needed and attempt the update fresh.
When to Call a Professional
If the scooter will not power on or shows unusual error codes after a failed firmware update, contact Segway-Ninebot support. A bricked scooter requires service centre recovery via USB cable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to skip a Ninebot firmware update?
Yes. Firmware updates are optional. The scooter will continue to work normally on its current firmware. Updates usually add minor improvements or bug fixes — skipping one update will not cause any immediate problems.
What happens if a Ninebot firmware update bricks the scooter?
A truly bricked scooter (will not power on at all) is rare after a standard app update. If it occurs, contact Segway-Ninebot support — they can sometimes recover the device via a direct USB cable connection at a service centre.
