Kickstand Error

Segway-Ninebot Electric Scooter

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Segway-Ninebot kickstand error means the kickstand sensor is detecting that the stand is still down, preventing the motor from activating as a safety measure. The most common cause is a dirty or stuck sensor — cleaning around the kickstand pivot usually resolves it.

Affected Models

  • Ninebot KickScooter MAX G30
  • Ninebot KickScooter MAX G2
  • Ninebot KickScooter P65
  • Segway Ninebot ES4 with kickstand sensor

Common Causes

  • Kickstand sensor dirty or obstructed with mud, grit, or debris
  • Kickstand not fully retracted — partially deployed position triggers the sensor
  • Kickstand sensor magnet has shifted or fallen off
  • Kickstand sensor failed or wiring connector loose
  • Kickstand physically bent — not returning to the fully retracted position

How to Fix It

  1. Fully retract the kickstand and check it clicks into place.

Lift the kickstand fully with your foot until you feel or hear a click. Some riders don't push it fully to the retracted position, leaving it at an angle that partially triggers the sensor. Test by pushing the kickstand firmly all the way up.

  2. Clean around the kickstand pivot and sensor area.

Mud, grit, and debris around the kickstand hinge can prevent the stand from fully retracting. Use a damp cloth to clean the kickstand pivot area and ensure the stand swings freely.

  3. Locate and inspect the kickstand sensor.

The kickstand sensor is typically a small magnetic switch or hall sensor near the kickstand pivot point on the deck. Check that the small magnet on the kickstand arm is still attached and correctly positioned relative to the sensor.

  4. Check the sensor wiring connector.

Trace the wire from the kickstand sensor back to where it enters the deck. If accessible, check the connector for secure seating. A loose connector gives the controller a permanent 'kickstand down' reading.

  5. Check if the kickstand is bent.

If the scooter has been dropped, the kickstand arm may be bent and no longer reaches the fully retracted position. Inspect visually — if bent, the kickstand arm can sometimes be carefully straightened, or replaced as a spare part.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I disable the kickstand sensor on a Ninebot scooter?

On some models, the kickstand sensor can be bypassed by looping the sensor connector — this tricks the controller into always reading 'kickstand up'. This disables the safety function, so it should only be done as a temporary fix while awaiting a replacement sensor.

Is a kickstand error the same as a brake error on a Ninebot?

No. A kickstand error prevents motor activation because the controller thinks the scooter is on its stand. A brake error indicates a fault with the brake sensor or brake circuit. Both prevent riding but for different reasons.
