Brakes Not Working

Xiaomi Electric Scooter

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Xiaomi scooter brakes not working means either the electronic brake (ebrake lever sensor) is not sending a cutoff signal to the motor, or the mechanical disc brake needs adjustment. Do not ride the scooter until brakes are confirmed functional — this is a critical safety issue.

Affected Models

  • Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter
  • Xiaomi Mi Scooter Pro
  • Xiaomi Mi Scooter Pro 2
  • Xiaomi Mi Scooter 3
  • Xiaomi Mi Scooter 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • Brake lever sensor wire disconnected or damaged at the handlebar junction
  • Electronic brake (ebrake) cable pinched inside the stem after folding
  • Mechanical disc brake pads worn out and not contacting the rotor
  • Disc brake caliper out of alignment — pads not centered on the rotor
  • Firmware glitch causing ebrake signal to be ignored by the controller

How to Fix It

  1. Test each brake independently.

Squeeze only the left brake lever while stationary — you should feel motor resistance if the ebrake is working. Then test the right lever for the mechanical disc brake. Identify which brake system has failed before proceeding.

  2. Inspect the brake lever sensor wire.

At the handlebar, trace the thin wire from the brake lever down into the handlebar tube. Look for any visible cuts, pinches, or disconnected connectors. A disconnected ebrake wire will result in the motor not cutting off when the lever is squeezed.

  3. Check the disc brake caliper alignment.

Spin the rear wheel and observe whether the disc brake pads drag heavily or whether the rotor passes cleanly between the pads. If the pads are not centered, loosen the two caliper mounting bolts, squeeze the brake lever to center the caliper, then re-tighten.

  4. Inspect brake pad thickness.

Look through the caliper opening to see the brake pads. If the pads are worn down to less than 1mm, they will not grip the rotor effectively. Replace the pads — generic M365-compatible brake pads are widely available.

  5. Update firmware and test ebrake.

Connect the Xiaomi app (Mi Home), navigate to firmware updates for the scooter. Install any available update. After updating, test the ebrake by accelerating gently and squeezing the brake lever — the motor should cut off immediately.

When to Call a Professional

Brake failure is a critical safety issue. If the brake does not stop the motor or slow the scooter effectively after basic checks, take it to a certified Xiaomi service center before riding again.
