Emergency Stop / Safety Key Not Working
Bowflex Fitness Equipment
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Bowflex treadmill emergency stop not working is almost always because the safety key is not fully inserted into the console slot, or the safety key and lanyard are not clipped to your clothing. The safety key must be fully pushed into the console and the lanyard attached to you — pulling the key stops the belt immediately.
Affected Models
- Bowflex BXT216
- Bowflex BXT116
- Bowflex T22 Treadmill
- Bowflex TreadClimber
- All Bowflex treadmill models with safety key
Common Causes
- Safety key not fully inserted into the console — partial insertion may not complete the circuit
- Safety key and lanyard not clipped to the user — the key cannot be pulled if not attached
- Safety key contact points corroded or dirty — poor electrical contact prevents the circuit from closing
- Console safety key socket damaged from repeated use
- User confused the pause button with emergency stop — they are different functions
How to Fix It
-
Insert the safety key fully into the console.
The safety key is a magnetic or physical key that plugs into a slot on the treadmill console — usually marked with a safety symbol or red color. Push the key firmly into the slot until it seats completely — a partial insertion may not complete the safety circuit. When correctly inserted, the treadmill should start normally and a small LED near the slot may illuminate.
-
Attach the lanyard to your clothing.
Clip the other end of the safety key lanyard to your waistband, shorts pocket, or shirt. The lanyard connects you to the key — if you fall or step back too far, the lanyard pulls the key from the console and immediately stops the belt. Do not skip this step — the emergency stop only works if the key can be pulled from the console.
-
Test the emergency stop before each session.
Start the treadmill at the slowest speed and intentionally pull the safety key to confirm it stops the belt immediately. The belt should stop within 1 second of the key being pulled. If the belt continues running after the key is removed, do not use the treadmill — it is unsafe.
-
Clean the safety key contacts.
Inspect the safety key and the console socket for corrosion, sweat residue, or debris. Clean the key contacts with a dry cloth or a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab — allow to dry fully before reinserting. Corrosion on the contacts prevents the electrical circuit from completing, which can cause the machine to not start or the stop to be unreliable.
-
Replace the safety key if damaged.
Bowflex replacement safety keys are available from Bowflex directly and from fitness equipment parts suppliers. Order the correct part number for your treadmill model — safety keys are model-specific and not universally interchangeable. Never operate a treadmill without the safety key even at slow speeds — it is the last line of defense against a fall injury.
