E1

Bowflex Fitness Equipment

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E1 on a Bowflex treadmill means the safety key (magnetic stop key) is not inserted. Insert the safety clip into the console — the treadmill cannot start without it.

Affected Models

  • Bowflex Treadmill 10
  • Bowflex Treadmill 22
  • Bowflex BXT116
  • Bowflex BXT216

Common Causes

  • Safety key not attached to the console
  • Safety key attached to clothing and pulled out during use
  • Safety key magnet has weakened and no longer registers
  • Safety key port on the console is faulty

How to Fix It

  1. Insert the safety key (magnetic clip) into the console slot.

The safety key is the red plastic clip attached to a cord. Clip one end to your clothing and insert the magnetic end into the slot on the console. The treadmill cannot start without it — this is an intentional safety feature.

  2. Check the safety key is making proper contact.

Remove and reinsert the key firmly. If the magnet has weakened, it may sit in the slot without making electrical contact. Try holding it in place while pressing Start.

  3. Clean the safety key slot.

Dust and sweat residue in the slot can prevent contact. Use a dry cotton bud to clean inside the slot.

  4. Replace the safety key if the magnet has failed.

Replacement safety keys are available from Bowflex or as universal treadmill safety keys. Search for a compatible key for your specific treadmill model.

  5. Check the console safety key port.

If a new key doesn't fix E1, the port itself may be faulty. Contact Bowflex support at bowflex.com for a console replacement under warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bypass the safety key on a Bowflex treadmill?

You should not — the safety key is there to stop the treadmill immediately if you fall or step off. Removing it creates a genuine safety risk. Replacement keys are inexpensive; use the correct safety equipment.
