Treadmill Belt Slipping
Bowflex Fitness Equipment
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A slipping Bowflex treadmill belt is almost always caused by the belt being too loose or the deck needing lubrication. Tighten the belt by turning the rear roller bolts clockwise one quarter turn on each side. Apply 100% silicone treadmill lubricant under the belt every 3–6 months.
Affected Models
- Bowflex Treadmill 10
- Bowflex Treadmill 22
- Bowflex Treadmill 7
- BXT216
- BXT116
Common Causes
- Belt too loose — stretched from use
- Deck surface dry and needs lubrication
- Belt misaligned and tracking to one side
- Belt worn through normal use
- Motor pulley worn
How to Fix It
-
Turn the rear roller bolts one quarter turn clockwise on both sides.
Use the Allen key provided with the treadmill. Always turn both sides equally — uneven tightening causes belt misalignment. Test at walking speed before running.
-
Lubricate the deck with 100% silicone treadmill lubricant.
Lift one side of the belt and apply lubricant to the deck surface underneath. Repeat on the other side. Walk on it at low speed for 5 minutes to spread the lubricant.
-
Check belt alignment.
Walk at 3 mph and watch the belt from behind — it should stay centered. If it drifts left, tighten the right bolt one quarter turn. If it drifts right, tighten the left bolt.
-
Inspect the belt for wear.
Turn the treadmill off and slide your hand under the belt. A worn belt feels thin and smooth on the underside. Bowflex recommends replacing the belt if the deck is visible through any worn area.
-
Check the motor pulley for debris.
Unplug the treadmill and remove the motor hood cover. Check for loose debris around the motor pulley. Vacuum any lint or dust from the motor area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bowflex recommends lubricating the treadmill deck every 3 months or every 150 miles of use, whichever comes first. Use only 100% silicone lubricant — never WD-40 or oil-based products.
How do I know if my Bowflex treadmill belt needs replacing?
A belt that slips even after tensioning and lubrication, has visible wear through the black coating, or feels stiff and cracked needs replacing. Contact Bowflex support to order a replacement belt for your specific model.
