Incline Motor Fault

Horizon Fitness Fitness Equipment

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Horizon incline motor that does not respond is usually caused by a failed limit switch, blown fuse, or a stuck motor. Check for any error code first, then test the incline motor and limit switches.

Affected Models

  • Horizon 7.0 AT
  • Horizon 7.4 AT
  • Horizon Evolve 5
  • Horizon T101
  • Horizon T202
  • Vision T9450

Common Causes

  • Failed incline motor (the actuator that raises and lowers the deck)
  • Limit switch open (motor reached end of travel and switch tripped)
  • Incline motor wires disconnected
  • Failed motor controller for the incline circuit
  • Calibration lost — motor needs recalibration via service mode

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle the treadmill.

Turn off the mains and wait 30 seconds, then power back on. A stuck calibration value can sometimes clear with a fresh start.

  2. Listen for the motor.

Press the incline button on the console. If you hear the motor running but no movement, the motor is working but the gear or screw drive is jammed. If silent, no power reaches the motor.

  3. Check the incline limit switch.

On many Horizon treadmills, a limit switch detects when the motor reaches its maximum or minimum incline. A failed switch tells the controller the motor is at its limit when it is not. Replacement switches are available from Horizon.

  4. Inspect the motor wiring.

With the treadmill unplugged, lift the motor cover and find the incline motor (usually a long screw-drive actuator under the front of the deck). Reseat the motor wire connections. Look for damaged wires or burnt connectors.

  5. Recalibrate the incline.

After any incline motor work, recalibration is usually needed. Horizon customer service can guide you through entering the service mode and running the calibration routine for your model.

When to Call a Professional

Replacing an incline motor is a DIY task for confident users. Calibration after replacement requires entering the service mode — Horizon customer service can guide you through the process.
