Belt Slipping / Drifting

NordicTrack Treadmill

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A slipping treadmill belt means it is too loose or needs lubrication. A drifting belt (moving to one side) needs alignment adjustment. Both are easy fixes with an Allen wrench.

Affected Models

  • NordicTrack Commercial 1750
  • NordicTrack Commercial 2450
  • NordicTrack T Series
  • Most NordicTrack treadmills

Common Causes

  • Belt tension too loose
  • Belt needs lubrication — friction causing hesitation
  • Belt tracking off-center (drifting left or right)
  • Walking deck worn
  • Roller bearings worn

How to Fix It

  1. Tighten the belt: use the Allen wrench on the rear roller bolts.

Turn BOTH bolts clockwise 1/4 turn at a time. The belt should lift 2-3 inches from the deck in the center.

  2. Lubricate the belt with silicone treadmill lubricant.

Lift the belt edge and spray silicone lubricant underneath. Do NOT use WD-40 or oil — only 100% silicone lubricant.

  3. To fix drifting: adjust the rear roller alignment.

If the belt drifts LEFT, tighten the LEFT rear bolt 1/4 turn. If it drifts RIGHT, tighten the RIGHT rear bolt. Run the treadmill at low speed and check alignment.

  4. Walk on the center of the belt — not to one side.

Consistently walking off-center causes the belt to drift. Walk in the center for even wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I lubricate the treadmill belt?

Every 3-6 months or every 150 miles of use. More frequently if the belt feels sticky or hesitates.

What lubricant should I use?

100% silicone lubricant only. Many brands sell treadmill-specific silicone. Never use WD-40, petroleum-based oil, or cooking spray.
