Lubrication Required / Belt Squeaking

NordicTrack Treadmill

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

NordicTrack treadmills display a lubrication reminder after a set number of hours to maintain belt and deck life. Apply 1–2 oz of 100% silicone lubricant under the center of the belt by lifting each side. Do not use WD-40, petroleum-based lubricants, or spray bottles — use only liquid silicone treadmill lubricant.

Affected Models

  • NordicTrack Commercial 1750
  • NordicTrack T 6.5 S
  • NordicTrack T 8.5 S
  • NordicTrack EXP 7i
  • NordicTrack Commercial 2950
  • All NordicTrack treadmill models

Common Causes

  • Lubrication interval reached — machine prompts after set hours of use
  • Belt running rough, tight, or making friction noise indicating the deck is dry
  • Previous lubrication worn off — silicone lubricant dissipates over time
  • High-use environment (daily use, heavier users) depletes lubrication faster
  • Belt tension too tight — reduces lubricant distribution across the deck

How to Fix It

  1. Gather the correct lubricant.

Use only 100% silicone treadmill lubricant in liquid form. Do NOT use WD-40, white lithium grease, spray silicone, petroleum jelly, or any lubricant not specifically designed for treadmill use. These will damage the belt material and void the warranty. NordicTrack-brand treadmill lubricant or ifit-branded lubricant is suitable.

  2. Loosen the belt for access.

If the belt is very tight, slightly loosen the rear roller bolts (one-quarter turn each on the left and right, equally) to allow the belt to lift at the sides. Do not loosen so much that the belt begins to slip — just enough to slide your hand or the lubricant tube underneath.

  3. Apply lubricant under the centre of the belt.

Lift the left edge of the belt and squeeze approximately 1 oz (30ml) of silicone lubricant in an S-pattern across the centre of the deck (not the edges). Lift the right edge and apply another 1 oz in the same pattern. Focus on the area under where your feet land while walking — the middle third of the deck length.

  4. Spread the lubricant by running the belt.

Step on the treadmill and walk at a slow speed (2–3 mph) for 3–5 minutes. This spreads the lubricant evenly across the deck surface. Do not run at high speed immediately after lubrication.

  5. Reset the lubrication reminder.

After lubricating, reset the maintenance counter in the iFit app or on the treadmill console. On most NordicTrack models, go to Settings > Maintenance and select Reset Lube Reminder. Lubricate every 150 hours of use or every 6 months, whichever comes first.

When to Call a Professional

If the belt still feels rough or stiff after applying two applications of silicone lubricant one week apart, the deck surface may be worn beyond recovery and will need replacement.
