Heart Rate Monitor Not Connecting

Peloton Exercise Bike / Tread

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Heart rate monitor not connecting to Peloton is usually a Bluetooth pairing issue. Make sure the HRM is in pairing mode, wet the sensor strap, and check that it is not connected to your phone instead.

Affected Models

  • Peloton Bike
  • Peloton Bike+
  • Peloton Tread
  • Peloton Row

Common Causes

  • HRM connected to your phone's Bluetooth instead of the Peloton
  • HRM battery dead
  • Chest strap sensor pads dry — no conductivity
  • HRM not in pairing mode
  • Peloton Bluetooth interference from nearby devices

How to Fix It

  1. Disconnect the HRM from your phone first.

Bluetooth devices can only connect to one device at a time. Open your phone's Bluetooth settings and disconnect the HRM.

  2. Wet the chest strap sensor pads.

Chest strap HRMs need moisture to detect your heart rate. Lick or wet the contact pads before putting it on.

  3. Pair via the Peloton screen: Settings > Heart Rate Monitor > search.

Make sure the HRM is on and in range. It should appear in the list within 10 seconds.

  4. Replace the HRM battery.

Most chest strap HRMs use a CR2032 coin cell. A low battery causes intermittent connection failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Peloton work with Apple Watch?

Peloton Bike+ and Tread support Apple Watch via Apple GymKit. The original Bike does not support Apple Watch directly — use a Bluetooth chest strap instead.

Which HRMs work with Peloton?

Any Bluetooth heart rate monitor works: Polar H10, Garmin HRM, Wahoo TICKR, Peloton's own HRM. ANT+ only monitors do NOT work — Peloton uses Bluetooth.
