Error Code SC

Peloton Exercise Bike

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Peloton Error Code SC means the console cannot read the speed or cadence sensor signal from the flywheel. The most common cause is the flywheel magnet having moved out of alignment with the sensor. Restart the console first — if SC persists, check the magnet position on the flywheel and reseat the sensor cable.

Affected Models

  • Peloton Bike (original)
  • Peloton Bike+

Common Causes

  • Flywheel cadence/speed magnet shifted away from sensor alignment
  • Cadence sensor cable connector loose from the main electronics board
  • Cadence sensor damaged from sweat or condensation exposure
  • Software glitch displaying a false SC error — usually clears on restart
  • Bike firmware update interrupted mid-process, corrupting sensor configuration

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the Peloton console.

Hold the power button on the back of the touchscreen for 5 seconds until the power menu appears. Select Restart. After restarting, start a Just Ride session and check whether SC still appears. Approximately 30% of SC errors are software-related and resolve on restart.

  2. Check the flywheel magnet position.

Rotate the pedals slowly by hand and watch the small magnet affixed to the flywheel rim. The magnet must pass within 3–5mm of the sensor mounted on the bike frame. If the magnet is positioned too far outward or inward on the flywheel, it will not be detected. Loosen the magnet set screw, reposition, and retighten.

  3. Inspect the sensor cable connection.

The sensor cable connects the cadence sensor to the main board inside the bike frame. Vibration over time can loosen this connector. Unplug the bike, remove the access panel on the frame (if accessible), and firmly reseat the sensor cable connector.

  4. Check for moisture around the sensor.

Heavy sweating can drip into the flywheel area and corrode the sensor contacts. Wipe down the area around the sensor with a dry cloth. Use a mat under the bike to reduce floor moisture and a sweat guard over the console area during intense rides.

  5. Contact Peloton support.

If SC persists after the above steps, contact Peloton support at onepeloton.com/support. Provide the error code and the steps you have already tried. Peloton often covers cadence sensor replacements under the Bike's standard warranty or an extended service plan.

When to Call a Professional

If Error Code SC returns after every restart and the magnet is confirmed aligned, the cadence sensor itself is faulty and needs replacement. Peloton support can dispatch a field technician or send a replacement sensor.
