Handlebar Not Adjusting / Won't Lock
Peloton Exercise Bike
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Peloton handlebars that will not lock in position have a worn or insufficiently tightened adjustment knob. Tighten the knob firmly — hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a cloth for grip. If the handlebars still drop under riding load, the knob's threaded insert has stripped and the knob needs to be replaced.
Affected Models
- Peloton Bike (original)
- Peloton Bike+
Common Causes
- Handlebar height knob not tightened sufficiently after adjustment
- Knob or its threaded insert stripped from repeated adjustment
- Handlebar post corroded or rough — binds and resists smooth adjustment
- Fore-aft handlebar knob (front/back position) not tightened after adjustment
- Handlebar post set screw loose, allowing post to rotate unpredictably
How to Fix It
-
Tighten the handlebar height adjustment knob.
The handlebar height knob is on the left side of the handlebar post. After setting height, turn the knob clockwise firmly by hand, then grip with a cloth and give a firm additional quarter turn. The handlebars should not move at all when you push down and pull up on them after tightening.
-
Also tighten the fore-aft handlebar knob.
The forward/backward handlebar position is controlled by a knob located under the handlebar stem or pointing forward. Both the height and fore-aft knobs must be tightened for the handlebars to be stable. Check both after any adjustment.
-
Clean the handlebar post tube.
Wipe the handlebar post with a dry cloth to remove sweat and grime buildup. Sweat corrosion makes the post rough, causing it to stick at certain heights and making it harder to tighten. Apply a tiny amount of PTFE dry lubricant to the post to allow smooth, confident adjustment.
-
Test stability under riding load.
After tightening, grip the handlebars and push forward and backward firmly to simulate standing ride loads. If any movement is felt, the knob is not holding. For Peloton Bike+, the handlebars also have a pivot (for rotating during scenic rides) — confirm the pivot lock is engaged if you do not want rotation.
-
Request a replacement knob from Peloton.
If the handlebar drops after tightening, the knob needs replacement. Contact Peloton support at onepeloton.com/support with your bike's serial number. Out-of-warranty bikes can purchase the handlebar knob as a spare part. Installation requires no tools — the old knob unscrews and the new one threads on.
When to Call a Professional
If the handlebar drops during a ride with the knob fully tightened, the knob or locking collar is stripped. Peloton offers replacement knobs through support — within warranty these are provided free of charge.
