Resistance Not Changing

Peloton Exercise Bike

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Peloton resistance not changing is usually caused by a faulty resistance sensor (the magnetic encoder under the knob) or a loose connection between the sensor and the console. Manual resistance changes may still work even when the screen does not track them.

Affected Models

  • Peloton Bike
  • Peloton Bike+

Common Causes

  • Resistance sensor (magnetic encoder) failing or out of calibration
  • Loose wiring connection between the resistance knob assembly and the console
  • Software bug causing the resistance display to freeze — actual resistance may still change
  • Resistance knob physically damaged or the magnet inside worn
  • Calibration drift — sensor readings shifted from factory calibration

How to Fix It

  1. Determine if the problem is the display or the actual resistance.

Turn the resistance knob and notice if you feel the physical resistance of the flywheel changing. If you feel the bike getting harder and easier to pedal as you turn the knob, the mechanism is working — only the sensor or display reading is wrong. If there is no physical change in resistance at all, the brake pad or magnet mechanism may be the issue.

  2. Restart the Peloton tablet.

Hold the power button on the back of the screen for 5-10 seconds to shut down. Wait 30 seconds, then restart. A frozen resistance display due to a software glitch will clear on restart.

  3. Calibrate the resistance sensor.

Peloton bikes can be recalibrated through a service menu. Contact Peloton support at onepeloton.com and request a resistance calibration guide for your bike model. Calibration resets the sensor's reference points and often resolves readings that are stuck or drifting.

  4. Check the resistance sensor cable connection.

The resistance sensor connects via a thin cable that runs up through the bike frame to the console. If your bike was recently moved or the frame was knocked, this cable can work loose. Peloton support can guide you through accessing the connection point if you are comfortable with basic disassembly.

  5. Contact Peloton support for sensor replacement.

Resistance sensor replacement is a covered repair if the bike is under warranty. Out-of-warranty sensor replacement is a common Peloton service — the part costs $30-50 and a technician visit or DIY guide is available through Peloton support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Peloton resistance read differently than my instructor's cues?

Peloton resistance is not standardized between bikes — it is a relative scale that varies based on calibration. A resistance of 50 on your bike may feel different from 50 on someone else's. If your resistance was recently calibrated differently, your numbers will not match the instructor's cues exactly — focus on the feel (RPE) rather than the number.

My Peloton Bike+ resistance changes automatically during classes — is that normal?

Yes — the Peloton Bike+ (not the original Bike) has Auto-Follow resistance, which automatically adjusts the resistance to match instructor cues during certain classes. This is a feature, not a fault. You can disable Auto-Follow in the class settings if you prefer manual control.
