FFB Not Working

Fanatec Sim Racing Hardware

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Force feedback is the resistance and vibration you feel through the steering wheel during racing. When it stops working, the wheel spins freely with no resistance at all. This is almost always a settings issue in the game or Fanatec app — not a hardware failure.

Affected Models

  • CSL DD
  • DD Pro
  • GT DD Extreme
  • Podium DD1
  • Podium DD2
  • CSL Elite Wheelbase v2

Common Causes

  • FFB strength set to zero in the game's wheel settings
  • Fanatec app FFB setting overriding the in-game setting
  • Game does not recognize the wheelbase as a force feedback device
  • Wheelbase entered protection mode due to overheating — FFB disabled until it cools
  • Firmware mismatch between wheelbase and steering wheel

How to Fix It

  1. Check the FFB strength setting inside the game. Go to the game's wheel or controller settings and confirm FFB is not set to zero.

This is the most common cause — FFB can be accidentally set to 0 in game settings, making the wheel feel completely dead.

  2. Open the Fanatec app and check the FFB setting on the tuning menu. Make sure it is not set to zero or OFF.

The Fanatec app has its own global FFB multiplier that applies on top of in-game settings. Both need to be set correctly.

  3. In the game settings, confirm the correct wheel profile is selected. Look for a Fanatec or CSL DD profile specifically.

Using a generic gamepad or Xbox controller profile disables force feedback. The correct wheel profile unlocks FFB support.

  4. Restart the wheelbase by unplugging and replugging the power cable. Wait 30 seconds before restarting.

If the base entered thermal protection mode, it disables FFB until the motor cools down. A full restart after cooling restores it.

  5. Update the wheelbase firmware through the Fanatec app. A firmware mismatch between components can disable FFB.

The wheelbase and steering wheel must be on compatible firmware versions. Updating both resolves most firmware-related FFB issues.

When to Call a Professional

FFB issues are almost always settings-related and do not require professional help. If force feedback never worked at all since purchase, the wheelbase motor may be faulty. Contact Fanatec support at support.fanatec.com if the motor appears to be the issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does FFB work in one game but not another?

Different games handle force feedback differently. A game without a Fanatec profile may not activate FFB at all, or may need a third-party plugin. Check if the game has a specific Fanatec or direct drive wheel setting.

Can a firmware update cause FFB to stop working?

Yes — if the firmware on the wheelbase and wheel are now mismatched, FFB can be affected. Update all components through the Fanatec app to make sure they are all on compatible versions.

My wheel has resistance but no detail or vibration — is that also FFB not working?

No — that is FFB working at a basic level but with low detail settings. Increase the FFB detail and damper settings in both the Fanatec app and the game. This is a tuning issue, not a fault.
