Handbrake Not Detected

Fanatec Sim Racing Hardware

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The Fanatec ClubSport Handbrake connects via RJ12 cable to the wheelbase. If it's not detected, check the cable and which RJ12 port you're using.

Affected Models

  • ClubSport Handbrake V1.5
  • CSL DD
  • DD Pro
  • GT DD Extreme
  • Podium DD1
  • Podium DD2
  • CSL Elite Wheelbase v2

Common Causes

  • RJ12 cable not fully inserted
  • Plugged into shifter port instead of handbrake port (or vice versa — some wheelbases share ports)
  • Damaged RJ12 cable
  • Firmware mismatch requiring update
  • Game not mapping the handbrake axis correctly

How to Fix It

  1. Check the RJ12 connection at both ends.

Push the cable clip firmly until it clicks into both the handbrake and wheelbase ports.

  2. Check which port the handbrake should use on your wheelbase.

The CSL DD and DD Pro have a combined SHIFTER/HB port. When both shifter and handbrake are connected, a USB hub solution or Fanatec ClubSport USB Adapter may be needed. Check the Fanatec setup guide for your specific wheelbase.

  3. Confirm handbrake appears in the Fanatec app.

Open the Fanatec Control Panel. Pull the handbrake handle — the axis should move. If nothing appears, the hardware connection is the issue.

  4. Update all firmware.

Firmware mismatches cause detection failures. Update wheelbase, rim, and handbrake firmware together via the Fanatec app.

  5. In your game, check if the handbrake axis is mapped.

Even a detected handbrake needs to be assigned in-game. Go to your game's controller settings and manually assign the handbrake axis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the handbrake and shifter at the same time on a CSL DD?

The CSL DD has one RJ12 port shared between shifter and handbrake. To use both simultaneously, you need the Fanatec ClubSport USB Adapter, which gives both devices their own USB connection to the PC.
