Pedals Not Detected

Fanatec Sim Racing Hardware

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Fanatec pedals connect to the wheelbase via a RJ12 cable, not directly to the PC via USB. If pedals are not detected, the problem is almost always the cable connection or the wheelbase not seeing them. Check the cable and connection first before anything else.

Affected Models

  • CSL Pedals
  • CSL Elite Pedals v2
  • CSL Elite Pedals LC
  • Podium Pedals
  • CSL DD
  • DD Pro

Common Causes

  • RJ12 cable not fully seated in the pedal port on the wheelbase
  • RJ12 cable damaged or faulty
  • Pedals connected to the wrong port on the wheelbase
  • Wheelbase firmware not recognizing the pedal model
  • Pedals connected directly to USB instead of through the wheelbase

How to Fix It

  1. Check the RJ12 cable connection at both ends — where it plugs into the pedals and where it plugs into the wheelbase. Press each end in firmly until it clicks.

The RJ12 connector looks like a wide phone cable plug. It is easy to have it partially inserted without realising.

  2. Check which port on the wheelbase you are using. Fanatec wheelbases have a dedicated pedal port — do not use the handbrake or shifter port.

The ports look identical but are labelled. Using the wrong port means the wheelbase will not recognise the pedals at all.

  3. Try a different RJ12 cable if you have one available, or borrow a phone cable that uses the same connector.

RJ12 cables can fail internally without any visible damage. A cable swap is the quickest way to rule this out.

  4. Open the Fanatec app with the pedals connected and check if they appear in the device list. If not, power cycle the wheelbase.

The wheelbase needs to be restarted after connecting accessories for some pedal models to be recognised correctly.

  5. Update the wheelbase firmware through the Fanatec app. Newer pedal models may require a more recent firmware version to be detected.

Older firmware versions sometimes do not have support for newer pedal hardware revisions.

When to Call a Professional

Pedal detection issues are almost always a cable or connection problem you can fix yourself. If the pedals are not detected after trying a new RJ12 cable, contact Fanatec support. A faulty pedal board is rare but possible and would require warranty service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Fanatec pedals connect to the PC directly or through the wheelbase?

Through the wheelbase, using an RJ12 cable. They do not have their own USB connection in most configurations. The wheelbase acts as a hub and passes pedal data to the PC.

My pedals worked yesterday — why are they suddenly not detected?

The most likely cause is the RJ12 cable worked loose or developed an internal break. Check the cable connection first, then try a replacement cable. Cables are cheap and easy to replace.

Can I connect Fanatec pedals directly to USB to bypass the wheelbase?

Some Fanatec pedal models support a USB connection as an alternative. Check the manual for your specific pedal model to see if a USB port is available. Not all models support this — the RJ12 connection through the wheelbase is the standard method.
