Request Update response failed

Fanatec Sim Racing Hardware

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

This message appears in the Fanatec Firmware Updater just before the final 'Undefined error encountered' error. It means the firmware updater sent a flash request to the device but got no response back. The device hardware — usually the WQR PCBA — is not responding to the update command.

Affected Models

  • CSL DD
  • DD Pro
  • GT DD Extreme
  • Podium DD1
  • Podium DD2
  • CSL Elite Wheelbase v2

Common Causes

  • WQR PCBA hardware fault — the board is not responding to firmware commands
  • USB connection instability during the update handshake
  • Device already in a broken firmware state (0.0.0.0) that blocks normal update responses
  • Fanatec app version incompatible with the device hardware revision
  • Power supply issue causing the device to reset during the update

How to Fix It

  1. Enable Manual Firmware Update / Device Recovery in the top-right of the Fanatec Firmware Manager.

This mode does not wait for a normal handshake response — it forces the flash through, which can bypass the failed response.

  2. Unplug all USB devices from your PC except the wheelbase, then retry the firmware update.

Other USB devices can cause bus congestion that interrupts the update handshake timing.

  3. Use a USB cable plugged directly into a rear motherboard port — avoid hubs, front panel ports, and USB extension cables.

Rear motherboard ports have the most stable power and data signal for firmware flashing operations.

  4. Power cycle the wheelbase completely before retrying — unplug the power cable from the back of the unit, wait 30 seconds, plug back in.

A hung microcontroller state can cause the device to stop responding to update requests. A full power cycle clears this.

  5. Try Fanatec app version 1.0 or driver package 455 instead of the latest version.

Older app versions use a different update handshake that can succeed where newer versions fail on certain hardware.

When to Call a Professional

If this error persists after all recovery attempts, the WQR PCBA has failed. Fanatec support can replace affected units under warranty. Contact support.fanatec.com — this is a known hardware failure pattern they are familiar with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 'Request Update response failed' a separate error from 'Undefined error encountered'?

They appear together — request failed is the step that causes the undefined error. The updater tried to get a response, failed, and then reported the overall error. Fixing one fixes the other.

Does this always mean the hardware is broken?

Not always — USB issues and app version mismatches can cause it too. Try the manual recovery steps first before assuming hardware failure. If recovery flashing also fails, then the hardware has likely failed.

Can this happen after a wheelbase warranty replacement?

Yes — the WQR PCBA is a separate component from the wheelbase motor unit. A replacement wheelbase can still have a WQR fault. If your replacement unit shows this error, contact Fanatec support again — the WQR may need separate replacement.
