Wheel Not Calibrating

Fanatec Sim Racing Hardware

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Calibration is the process where the wheelbase finds the center point of the steering wheel on startup. If calibration fails or gets stuck, the wheel will not reach center, will keep turning, or will behave erratically in-game. This is usually caused by a firmware issue, a wrong rotation setting, or a sensor fault.

Affected Models

  • CSL DD
  • DD Pro
  • GT DD Extreme
  • Podium DD1
  • Podium DD2
  • CSL Elite Wheelbase v2

Common Causes

  • Firmware mismatch between the wheelbase and steering wheel
  • Steering wheel rotation range set incorrectly in the Fanatec app or tuning menu
  • Wheel was physically moved or obstructed during the calibration sweep on startup
  • Hall effect sensor fault inside the wheelbase — sensor cannot find center
  • Wheel attached after the wheelbase had already powered on and finished calibrating

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the wheelbase completely, then power it back on — let the wheel complete its full calibration sweep without touching it.

The calibration sweep happens automatically at startup. Any obstruction or touch during this process causes it to fail or center incorrectly.

  2. Check the steering rotation setting in the Fanatec app tuning menu. Make sure it matches a realistic steering angle for your wheel — typically 900 degrees for most setups.

An extreme or unusual rotation value can cause calibration to behave unexpectedly or not complete properly.

  3. Update firmware for both the wheelbase and steering wheel through the Fanatec app.

A firmware mismatch between the wheelbase and wheel is a common cause of calibration failure. Both components must be on compatible versions.

  4. Perform a factory reset of the wheelbase settings through the Fanatec app — this resets the tuning menu to defaults.

Corrupted or extreme tuning values in the wheelbase settings can prevent correct calibration. A factory reset clears all of these.

  5. Always attach the steering wheel before powering on the wheelbase — not after.

Connecting the wheel after the base has already started means calibration ran without the wheel attached. The base cannot recalibrate mid-session without a restart.

When to Call a Professional

Most calibration issues are software or settings related. If the wheel consistently fails to find center after firmware updates and factory reset, the internal sensor may have failed. Contact Fanatec support if you suspect a hardware sensor fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my wheel keep turning past center on startup?

The wheelbase is overshooting the center point during calibration. This usually means the rotation range is set too high or the sensor data is inconsistent. Try a factory reset and let the calibration complete uninterrupted.

My center point is slightly off — how do I adjust it?

You can set a software offset in the Fanatec app tuning menu. Alternatively, some games have a wheel center offset setting built in. A persistent off-center issue after factory reset may indicate a sensor fault.

Does calibration need to happen every time I power on?

Yes — the wheelbase runs a brief calibration sweep every time it powers on. This is normal and takes a few seconds. Just do not touch the wheel during that initial sweep.
