Wheel Not Centering
Fanatec Sim Racing Hardware
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
On power-up, Fanatec wheelbases rotate the wheel to both ends of travel to find centre (auto-calibration). If the wheel keeps spinning without stopping, or doesn't return to centre during use, there is a calibration or FFB tuning issue.
Affected Models
- CSL DD
- DD Pro
- GT DD Extreme
- Podium DD1
- Podium DD2
- CSL Elite Wheelbase v2
Common Causes
- Wheel rim not properly attached — QR not fully locked
- FFB settings causing oscillation at centre (high FFB + high NDP)
- Auto-calibration interrupted by USB disconnect mid-spin
- Firmware fault requiring update
- Wheel lock not released before power-on
How to Fix It
-
Ensure the QR (quick release) is fully locked before powering on.
The Fanatec QR must click and lock before the base powers the motor. An unlocked or partially attached rim prevents proper calibration.
-
Let the auto-calibration complete without touching the wheel.
On power-up the wheel rotates slowly to both lock positions — this is normal. Do not hold or resist the wheel during this process.
-
Lower the FFB strength and NDP (natural damper) settings.
On the wheel's tuning menu: reduce FF (Force Feedback) and NDP. A high FF with low NDP causes oscillation where the wheel hunts for centre constantly.
-
Perform a full factory reset of the wheelbase.
In the Fanatec app: Device Settings → Factory Reset. This resets all FFB tuning to defaults and re-runs calibration.
-
Update firmware.
Some firmware versions had auto-calibration bugs fixed in later releases. Update via the Fanatec app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the startup rotation normal on Fanatec wheelbases?
Yes — all direct drive Fanatec bases rotate the wheel slowly at startup to detect the lock-to-lock range. This takes a few seconds and is completely normal. Only worry if it spins continuously without stopping.
