2003-5001

Nintendo Nintendo Switch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 2003-5001 means the Nintendo Switch failed to download or install a software update or game. The error typically appears when a background download stalls or when there is not enough storage space for the installation to complete. Most cases are resolved by freeing up storage space and restarting the download.

Affected Models

  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Nintendo Switch OLED

Common Causes

  • The microSD card or internal storage does not have enough free space for the download
  • The microSD card is corrupted or not properly formatted for the Switch
  • The internet connection dropped partway through the download, leaving a corrupted partial file
  • The download was paused in sleep mode and encountered an error when resuming
  • Nintendo's download servers experienced a temporary issue during your download

How to Fix It

  1. Check available storage space. Go to System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software. Check how much free space is available on the system memory and microSD card. The download needs more free space than just the game's final size.

A 10 GB game may temporarily need 15 GB of space during download and installation. Make sure you have enough room.

  2. Delete the failed download and restart it. On the Home screen, find the failed download icon, press A, and select 'Delete from Console.' Then redownload the game from the eShop.

A partially downloaded file can become corrupted. Deleting it and starting fresh usually resolves the installation error.

  3. Check the microSD card. Remove the card, inspect it for damage, and reinsert it firmly. If the card is not recognized or shows errors, go to System Settings > System > Initialize > Format microSD Card.

Formatting the microSD card deletes all downloaded games stored on it. Make sure they are in your purchase history — you can redownload them at no charge.

  4. Restart the Nintendo Switch. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds, select Power Options > Restart. Then retry the download.

A restart clears any temporary errors in the download manager.

  5. If the error keeps appearing, check that your internet connection is stable. Connect to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network or use a wired ethernet adapter for more reliable large downloads.

A connection that is technically working but has packet loss will cause download errors on large files.

When to Call a Professional

Error 2003-5001 is a software or storage error that does not require hardware repair. All fixes can be done at home. If the error persists after clearing space and reformatting the microSD card, contact Nintendo Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

I deleted the failed game but I'm worried about losing my save data. Will it be deleted too?

No. On the Nintendo Switch, save data is stored separately from the game software. Deleting the game (software) does not delete your save data. When you redownload and reinstall the game, your save will still be there. The only exception is if you specifically delete the save data from Data Management.

Can I use a USB flash drive instead of a microSD card for Switch game storage?

No. The Nintendo Switch only supports microSD cards for external storage expansion. USB drives, USB hard drives, and other storage devices are not supported. Make sure your microSD card is UHS-I compatible — Class 10 or UHS Speed Class 1 or 3 is recommended.

What is the maximum microSD card size supported by the Switch?

The Nintendo Switch supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards. Capacities up to 2 TB (microSDXC) are theoretically supported. In practice, the largest reliable cards used with Switch are 512 GB and 1 TB. Use a well-known brand like Samsung or SanDisk for best compatibility.
