2005-0002

Nintendo Nintendo Switch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 2005-0002 means your Nintendo Switch has detected a problem with the microSD card. The console cannot read from or write to the card properly. This can be caused by a faulty card, a dirty contact, or a card that is too slow for the Switch.

Affected Models

  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Nintendo Switch OLED

Common Causes

  • The microSD card is not fully inserted and has a loose connection inside the slot
  • The metal contacts on the microSD card are dirty, corroded, or worn
  • The microSD card itself is damaged or has developed bad sectors
  • The card is a counterfeit or very low quality card that is not reliable
  • The microSD card's speed rating is too slow — the Switch requires at least UHS Speed Class 1

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the Switch completely. Remove the microSD card from the slot on the bottom of the console. Inspect both the card and the slot for debris or visible damage.

Even a tiny piece of lint in the slot can prevent the card from seating properly.

  2. Clean the microSD card's gold contacts. Use a dry, lint-free cloth or a pencil eraser to gently clean the metal contacts on the bottom edge of the card.

Never use water or cleaning solutions on the card contacts. Dry cleaning only.

  3. Reinsert the card firmly until you feel it click into place. Power the Switch on and see if the error clears.

The microSD slot on the Switch uses a push-to-lock mechanism — you should feel and hear a click when it seats correctly.

  4. Test with a different microSD card if you have one available. If the Switch works with another card, your original card is faulty.

Nintendo recommends microSD cards rated UHS-I Speed Class 3 or A2. Cards from SanDisk, Samsung, and Lexar are reliable brands.

  5. If your original card is confirmed faulty, transfer your game data to a new card. Use a card reader and a computer to copy files from the old card to the new one before the old card fails completely.

microSD cards store downloaded games but not save data — saves are stored internally. You will need to redownload games if the card is unreadable.

When to Call a Professional

Error 2005-0002 is almost always a microSD card issue, not a Switch hardware fault. If the Switch shows this error even without a card inserted, or with multiple known-good cards, contact Nintendo Support at 1-800-255-3700. A faulty microSD card slot is a repair that Nintendo's service center handles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size microSD card should I get for my Switch?

For most users, 128 GB to 256 GB is plenty. Heavy players with many large games like Breath of the Wild and Pokémon titles may want 512 GB. The Switch supports cards up to 2 TB, though large capacities are expensive. Always buy from a reputable brand — cheap off-brand cards often fail quickly.

Will I lose my saves if my microSD card fails?

No. Game saves on the Nintendo Switch are stored in the console's internal memory, not on the microSD card. Only downloaded game software is stored on the microSD card. If the card fails, you will need to redownload your games — but your saved progress will still be there.

Can I use any microSD card with the Nintendo Switch?

The Switch supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards. The card must be at least Speed Class 10 or UHS Speed Class 1 for stable performance. UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) or A2-rated cards are recommended for the best experience. Counterfeit cards sold on auction sites can appear to work but often fail quickly — buy from reputable retailers.
