2124-4503

Nintendo Nintendo Switch

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 2124-4503 means your Nintendo Switch had a problem completing a download or communicating with the Nintendo eShop. This is usually caused by a network interruption or a temporary issue on Nintendo's servers. Restarting the download and your router usually clears it right away.

Affected Models

  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Nintendo Switch OLED

Common Causes

  • The Wi-Fi connection dropped during the download
  • Nintendo's eShop servers are temporarily busy or under maintenance
  • The microSD card ran out of space before the download could finish
  • The downloaded data was corrupted by a network interruption
  • The Switch's DNS settings are having trouble reaching Nintendo's servers

How to Fix It

  1. Check Nintendo's server status. Visit nintendo.com/consumer/network/en_US/network_status.jsp or search 'Nintendo Switch online status' on your phone. If their servers are listed as having issues, wait for Nintendo to resolve it before retrying.

Nintendo often runs eShop maintenance in the early morning hours.

  2. Cancel the failed download and start it fresh. On the Home screen, go to the Download Management icon (the icon with a progress indicator), press A on the failed download, and select 'Cancel'. Then restart the download from My Nintendo Library.

Retrying a failed download from where it stopped often keeps hitting the same problem. A fresh start is more reliable.

  3. Check your microSD card storage. Go to System Settings > System > Formatting Options > Manage Save Data/Screenshots and Videos, or more directly System Settings > Data Management. Make sure there is enough free space for the game you are downloading.

Large Switch games can be 10–20 GB. A full microSD card stops downloads in their tracks.

  4. Restart your router. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Once it reconnects, go back to the Switch and try the download again. A router restart clears stale connections that can cause download interruptions.

Long downloads are especially vulnerable to small Wi-Fi drops that you might not even notice.

  5. Change the DNS settings on your Switch to improve reliability. Go to System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings, select your network, choose 'Change Settings', and set the primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and secondary to 8.8.4.4.

Google's public DNS servers are more reliable for reaching Nintendo's servers than many ISP default DNS settings.

When to Call a Professional

Error 2124-4503 does not require any hardware repair. If this error appears on every download attempt across multiple networks, contact Nintendo Support at nintendo.com/consumer/repair. They can check your account and whether any server-side issues are affecting your downloads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave downloads running while the Switch is in sleep mode?

Yes. You can set your Switch to continue downloads in sleep mode. Go to System Settings > Sleep Mode and enable 'Maintain Internet Connection in Sleep Mode' and 'Auto-Download'. This lets large downloads run overnight without you having to keep the screen on.

Why does the eShop work on my phone app but not on the Switch itself?

The Nintendo Switch App on your phone and the eShop on the console are separate systems. If the app works but the console eShop does not, the issue is likely specific to your console's network connection or the console-side eShop service. Try changing DNS settings on the Switch — that often resolves the mismatch.

Will I be charged twice if my download fails and I restart it?

No. You are only charged once when you purchase a game, regardless of how many times the download needs to be retried. Failed downloads do not trigger additional charges. You can redownload purchased games as many times as needed from your Nintendo Account library.
