Nintendo Nintendo Switch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 2137-0010 means your Nintendo Switch could not reach Nintendo's online services. This typically happens during online multiplayer or when accessing Nintendo Switch Online features. Checking the Nintendo server status and restarting your router are the first steps.

Affected Models

  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Nintendo Switch OLED

Common Causes

  • Nintendo Switch Online servers are temporarily down or under maintenance
  • Your Wi-Fi router has blocked or is not forwarding the ports Nintendo uses
  • The NAT type on your router is too strict for Nintendo's peer-to-peer connections
  • Your Nintendo Switch Online subscription has expired
  • A firewall on your network is blocking Nintendo's online service traffic

How to Fix It

  1. Check Nintendo's network status at nintendo.com/consumer/network/en_US/network_status.jsp. If Nintendo Switch Online shows a service disruption, wait for them to restore it. There is nothing to fix locally.

Nintendo performs regular maintenance and will post the expected end time in advance.

  2. Run a connection test on the Switch. Go to System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. This will show your connection speed and — importantly — your NAT type. Type A or B is good. Type C or D will cause online gaming problems.

NAT type directly affects whether Nintendo's peer-to-peer multiplayer connections can be established.

  3. If your NAT type is C or D, enable UPnP on your router. Log in to your router's admin page (usually at 192.168.1.1 in a browser) and enable the UPnP option. Save and restart the router, then retest the Switch connection.

UPnP lets the Switch automatically open the ports it needs for online play without manual configuration.

  4. Check that your Nintendo Switch Online subscription is active. Go to System Settings > Nintendo Switch Online and review your membership status. If it has expired, online multiplayer features will not work.

Nintendo Switch Online is required for online multiplayer. Single-player games and local multiplayer do not require it.

  5. Restart your router and modem by unplugging them for 30 seconds, then reconnecting. While waiting, restart your Switch as well. This clears any stale connections on both ends.

A simultaneous restart of both the console and router gives the cleanest possible fresh start.

When to Call a Professional

Error 2137-0010 is a network and account issue — no hardware repair is needed. If you cannot resolve the NAT type issue through your router settings, contact your internet provider. They can help configure port forwarding on your specific router model for Nintendo Switch Online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NAT type and why does Nintendo care about it?

NAT (Network Address Translation) controls how your router handles connections between your devices and the internet. For online gaming, NAT Type A or B means your router is open enough for games to connect directly to other players. NAT Type C or D means your router is too restrictive and blocks the direct connections games need for multiplayer.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to use the eShop or download games?

No. The Nintendo eShop and downloading games work without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Nintendo Switch Online is only required for online multiplayer in most games. Some games have their own separate online systems that do not use Nintendo Switch Online.

Can I share a Nintendo Switch Online subscription with family?

Yes. A Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership covers up to 8 Nintendo Accounts. All accounts in your family group get full online access with one subscription. You can set up a family group at accounts.nintendo.com if you do not already have one.
