Affected Models

- PlayStation 4
Common Causes
- PSN servers are temporarily down for maintenance
- Your internet connection dropped or is unstable
- Incorrect account credentials stored on the console
- DNS settings are causing connection failures
- Console network settings need to be refreshed
How to Fix It
-
Check the PlayStation Network status page.
Visit status.playstation.com on your phone or computer. If PSN is down, just wait and try again later.
-
Restart your router and modem.
Unplug both devices from power. Wait 60 seconds. Plug the modem in first, then the router. Wait for them to fully connect.
-
Sign out and sign back in to your PlayStation account.
Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Sign Out. Then sign back in with your email and password.
-
Run the internet connection test on your console.
Go to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. This tells you exactly where the connection is failing.
-
Change your DNS settings to Google DNS.
Go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection. Use Custom setup and enter 8.8.8.8 as primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 as secondary.
When to Call a Professional
If you have tried everything and still cannot sign in, contact PlayStation Support. They can check if there is an account issue on their end that you cannot fix yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this mean my PlayStation account is banned?
Usually no — this error is almost always a connection issue, not a ban. If your account were banned you would see a different error message. Try the connection fixes first before worrying about your account.
How do I know if PSN is down?
Go to status.playstation.com on any device. Green means all services are running normally. Yellow or red means there is an outage affecting some or all players.
Why does this happen after I update my console?
Sometimes a system update resets network settings. Go to Settings > Network and reconnect to your Wi-Fi or wired connection. Then try signing in to PSN again.
