CE-30008-1
Sony PlayStation
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
CE-30008-1 means your PlayStation cannot read the disc you inserted. This prevents the game or Blu-ray from loading at all. The problem is usually a dirty or scratched disc, or a dirty disc drive lens.
Affected Models
- PlayStation 4
- PlayStation 4 Slim
- PlayStation 4 Pro
Common Causes
- The disc surface has fingerprints, smudges, or dust blocking the laser from reading it
- The disc has visible scratches that interrupt the data track
- The disc drive's laser lens has accumulated dust over time and cannot read properly
- The disc is inserted upside down or is not seated flat in the drive
- The disc itself is warped or has manufacturing defects that make it unreadable
How to Fix It
-
Eject the disc and inspect both sides. Look for fingerprints, smudges, or visible scratches on the shiny data side.
Hold the disc up to a light source at an angle — even faint marks show up clearly this way.
-
Clean the disc by wiping from the center outward in a straight line using a soft, lint-free cloth. Never wipe in circles.
Circular wiping can create scratches that follow the data track and make the problem worse.
-
Try inserting the disc again, making sure the label side faces up. Listen for the drive to engage and spin the disc.
The PS4 disc drive has no indicator light — you can only tell it accepted the disc by the sound.
-
Try a different disc to see if the problem is with one disc or with the drive itself.
If other discs work fine, the original disc is the problem. If no disc works, the drive needs attention.
-
Use a can of compressed air to gently blow into the disc slot to remove any dust that has settled on the laser lens.
Hold the can upright and use short, gentle bursts. Do not insert anything solid into the disc slot.
When to Call a Professional
If multiple clean, undamaged discs fail to load, the disc drive laser may be worn out. Laser replacement is a technical repair — take the console to a repair shop. PS4 disc drive repairs typically cost $60 to $100. Sony also offers mail-in repair at playstation.com/support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a scratched disc be repaired?
Light surface scratches can sometimes be polished out using a disc repair kit. These kits are available at electronics stores for around $10 to $20. Deep scratches that reach the data layer cannot be repaired — the disc will need to be replaced.
Does CE-30008-1 happen with Blu-ray movies too?
Yes. The PS4 uses the same disc drive for game discs and Blu-ray movies. If a movie disc triggers this error, the cause and fixes are exactly the same. If movies work but game discs fail, the disc format may be a factor — try a different game disc to confirm.
Is it worth cleaning the laser lens yourself?
Blowing compressed air through the disc slot is safe and often helps. Using a lens cleaning disc (sold at electronics stores) is also a low-risk option. Opening the console to manually clean the lens is more involved — only do this if you are comfortable with hardware.
