CE-34788-1
Sony PlayStation
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
CE-34788-1 means your PS4 system software is out of date. Sony requires your console to run the latest system software before it can connect to PlayStation Network. You need to install the available update before you can play online or access the Store.
Affected Models
- PlayStation 4
- PlayStation 4 Slim
- PlayStation 4 Pro
Common Causes
- The PS4 has been offline for a long time and missed automatic updates
- A previous update attempt failed and left the system on an old software version
- Automatic updates were disabled in settings, so no updates installed on their own
- The console was bought second-hand with an outdated system software version
- The update downloaded but was never installed because the console was turned off
How to Fix It
-
Connect your PS4 to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Then go to Settings > System Software Update.
The PS4 will check for the latest update automatically when you open this menu.
-
When prompted, select Update Now and follow the on-screen instructions. The console will download and install the update.
Make sure not to turn off the PS4 during the update. Installation can take 5 to 20 minutes depending on your internet speed.
-
If the online update fails, try Safe Mode. Turn the PS4 off, hold the power button for 7 seconds until two beeps, then select Update System Software from the menu.
Safe Mode downloads the update directly from Sony's servers with minimal system interference.
-
Enable automatic updates so this does not happen again. Go to Settings > System > Automatic Downloads and enable both Application Update Files and System Software Update Files.
With automatic updates on, your PS4 will install updates overnight in rest mode without any action needed from you.
-
If you cannot connect online at all, download the update file manually from playstation.com/update on a computer and install it via USB.
Put the file in a folder named PS4/UPDATE/ on a FAT32 or exFAT formatted USB drive, then use Safe Mode to install.
When to Call a Professional

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still play offline while my PS4 is out of date?
Yes. You can play disc-based games and previously downloaded games offline without updating. However, you cannot access PlayStation Network, the PlayStation Store, or online multiplayer until the update is installed. Some games may also require the update to launch their online components.
How often does Sony release system software updates?
Sony releases major updates several times a year and minor stability updates more frequently. Updates can add new features, improve performance, fix bugs, and patch security vulnerabilities. Enabling automatic updates ensures your console stays current without any effort on your part.
Is it safe to turn off the PS4 while an update is downloading?
Turning off during the download phase is fine — the download will resume next time. But never turn off the PS4 during the installation phase (the progress bar with system icons). Interrupting the installation can corrupt the system software and cause serious errors.
