CE-40830-3

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

CE-40830-3 means your PlayStation 5 failed to download or install a game or update. The download stopped partway through and could not resume or complete. This is usually caused by a network hiccup, a storage issue, or a corrupted download file.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 5
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

Common Causes

  • Your internet connection dropped or became too slow during the download
  • The PlayStation's internal SSD is running low on free space
  • The partially downloaded file became corrupted and cannot be completed
  • PlayStation Network servers had a temporary issue during the download
  • A strict NAT type or firewall setting is interrupting the data transfer

How to Fix It

  1. Delete the failed download and start again. Go to the Game Library, find the item with the error, press Options, and select Delete. Then search for the game in the PlayStation Store and download it fresh.

A corrupted partial download cannot always be repaired. Starting fresh is often the quickest fix.

  2. Check your available storage. Go to Settings > Storage and make sure you have enough free space. PS5 games can be 50 to 100+ GB. Delete games you no longer play to free up room.

If the drive is nearly full, downloads fail silently. Always keep at least 10–15% free.

  3. Restart your PS5 fully. Press the PS button, go to Power, and select Restart. Do not use Rest Mode — do a full restart.

A full restart clears the system cache and can resolve temporary download manager issues.

  4. Restart your router and modem. Unplug both from power, wait 60 seconds, then reconnect the modem first and wait for it to fully connect before plugging in the router.

This refreshes your network connection and often resolves slow or interrupted downloads.

  5. Connect via wired ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Plug an ethernet cable directly from your router to the PS5 for a faster and more stable connection during large downloads.

Wi-Fi is more prone to interruptions that trigger CE-40830-3. A wired connection is significantly more reliable.

When to Call a Professional

CE-40830-3 is a software and network error — not a hardware problem. You do not need a repair technician for this. If you consistently see this error on every download after trying all steps below, contact PlayStation Support at playstation.com/support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be charged again if I delete a failed download and restart it?

No. You already purchased the game and your license is saved to your PSN account. Deleting a failed download does not affect your purchase. Simply redownload from your Game Library or the PlayStation Store at no extra cost.

Why does this error keep happening on large game downloads?

Large downloads — especially 50 GB or bigger — have more chances for a connection hiccup to interrupt them. Wi-Fi signal drops, brief internet outages, and slow speeds can all cause the error. Using a wired ethernet connection and downloading during off-peak hours (late night) helps significantly.

Can I download games in Rest Mode to avoid this error?

Yes. Rest Mode downloads are generally stable and can help avoid interruptions. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable 'Stay Connected to the Internet.' This lets your PS5 download games while the console is asleep.
