CE-41340-8

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

CE-41340-8 means your PS4 ran into a problem while installing a game or application. This is usually caused by a corrupted download or not enough free storage space. Delete the partial install and try again — it normally works on the second attempt.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • The download was interrupted before it fully completed
  • There is not enough free space on the hard drive to complete the installation
  • The game disc has a scratch or smudge causing a read error
  • The downloaded game file became corrupted during the transfer
  • A system software bug is interfering with the installation process

How to Fix It

  1. Check your available storage. Go to Settings > Storage > System Storage. You need at least as much free space as the game's file size, and ideally double that. Delete old games or move data to a USB drive to free up room.

Many players are surprised how quickly storage fills up. A single modern game can be 50–100 GB.

  2. Delete the failed installation completely. Go to Settings > Storage > System Storage > Applications, find the partial install, press Options, and select Delete. Then restart the download or installation from scratch.

Trying to resume a broken install rarely works. A fresh start is faster and more reliable.

  3. If installing from a disc, eject the disc and clean it. Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth and wipe from the center outward in a straight line. Avoid circular motions. Re-insert the disc and try again.

Even a small fingerprint in the wrong spot can cause a read error that stops installation.

  4. Rebuild the PS4 database. Turn the console fully off, then hold the power button for 7 seconds until you hear two beeps. Select 'Rebuild Database' from the Safe Mode menu. This can fix installation issues caused by a corrupted database.

Rebuilding the database is safe and does not delete your data.

  5. Try installing on a different network. If you are on Wi-Fi, switch to a wired ethernet connection and start the download again. A more stable connection reduces the chance of the download being corrupted mid-transfer.

Large game downloads over unstable Wi-Fi are a frequent cause of this error.

When to Call a Professional

CE-41340-8 is almost always solvable at home. If you cannot install any game at all — not even ones that previously worked — the hard drive may be failing. In that case, contact Sony Support or take the console to a repair shop for a drive inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the install fail every time on the same game?

If every attempt to install a specific game fails, the disc may be scratched beyond recovery. For digital games, try deleting the download from your library and re-downloading it from the PlayStation Store. A persistent failure on a disc game may mean the disc needs to be replaced.

Can I install the game on a USB drive instead to save space?

Yes. You can use an extended storage device — a USB 3.0 hard drive or SSD — to expand your PS4's storage. Go to Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices to format a drive for use. Once set up, you can install games directly to the external drive.

Does this error delete my saved game data?

No. Saved game data is stored separately from the game files. Deleting a partial or failed installation will not remove your saved progress. Your saves will still be there when you successfully install the game.
