CE-43197-2

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

CE-43197-2 means your PlayStation 4 could not read the disc you inserted. The console recognized that a disc is present but cannot access the data on it. This can be caused by a dirty disc, a dirty lens, or a problem with the disc drive itself.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • The game disc is dirty, scratched, or physically damaged
  • The disc drive laser lens is dirty and cannot read the disc properly
  • The disc was inserted upside down or at an angle
  • The disc is from a different region and is not compatible with your console
  • The disc drive mechanism has worn out or developed a hardware fault

How to Fix It

  1. Inspect and clean the disc. Hold it by the edges and look at the shiny side under good lighting. Wipe gently from the center outward using a soft, lint-free cloth. Never wipe in circles.

Even a small fingerprint or smudge can prevent the laser from reading disc data correctly.

  2. Check that the disc is inserted the correct way. The shiny data side faces down (or inward for vertical consoles). The label side should be facing up or outward.

This is the most common cause of CE-43197-2 for new PS4 owners.

  3. Try a different disc. Insert another game or Blu-ray disc to see if it reads correctly. This tells you whether the problem is the disc or the drive.

If another disc works fine, the original disc is the problem — it may be too scratched to recover.

  4. Clean the disc drive lens. Use a Blu-ray disc lens cleaning kit (available at electronics stores). Follow the instructions included with the kit.

Dust and debris build up on the laser lens over time, especially in dusty environments.

  5. If none of the above work, rebuild the database from Safe Mode. Turn the PS4 off completely, hold the power button for 7 seconds until you hear a second beep, then select Rebuild Database from the Safe Mode menu.

In rare cases, a corrupted database entry causes the console to fail to read discs it has read before.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the disc and lens does not help, the disc drive may need professional attention. Disc drive repairs typically cost $50 to $120 at a repair shop. If your PS4 is still under warranty, contact Sony support before opening the console yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a scratched disc be repaired?

Minor scratches can sometimes be buffed out using a disc resurfacing machine. Many video game shops and libraries offer this service for a small fee. Deep gouges that cut through the data layer cannot be repaired — the disc is permanently damaged.

Will this error appear if I try to play a disc from another country?

PlayStation 4 games are region-free, so a game disc from any country should work. However, Blu-ray movies are region-locked and a disc from the wrong region will fail to play. If you are trying to play a foreign Blu-ray movie, region lock is likely the cause.

Is it worth repairing a PS4 disc drive?

It depends on the age of your console and the repair cost. If repair costs more than $100, buying a refurbished PS4 or upgrading to a PS5 may be better value. Ask for a diagnostic quote before committing to a repair.
