SU-30696-4

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

SU-30696-4 means your PlayStation failed to download a system software update. The download may have been interrupted or the update file became corrupted. Your console is still usable — you just need to complete the update successfully.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • Your internet connection dropped or became unstable during the update download
  • Not enough free storage space is available to download and store the update
  • The PlayStation servers were overloaded or temporarily unavailable
  • Your router disconnected the PS4 during a long background download
  • A previous failed update attempt left a corrupted partial file

How to Fix It

  1. Delete the failed download and try again. Go to Notifications > Downloads, find the failed system software update, press Options, and delete it. Then go to Settings > System Software Update and start fresh.

Retrying from scratch with a clean download is always the best first step.

  2. Check your available storage. Go to Settings > Storage > System Storage. You need at least 5 GB free for most updates. Delete games, video clips, or screenshots you no longer need.

The PS4 needs extra space beyond the update file size to extract and write the update correctly.

  3. Use a wired connection for the update. Plug an Ethernet cable directly from your router to your PS4. Wired connections are far more stable for large downloads than Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi disconnections are a very common cause of interrupted update downloads.

  4. Update using Safe Mode. Turn off the PS4. Hold the power button for 7 seconds until you hear a second beep. In Safe Mode, select option 3: Update System Software > Update via Internet.

Safe Mode dedicates all resources to the update and avoids conflicts with running apps.

  5. Update via USB drive. Download the update file from playstation.com on a computer. Copy it to a USB drive in the folder PS4 > UPDATE > PS4UPDATE.PUP. Install it from Safe Mode option 3: Update System Software > Update via USB Storage Device.

The USB method is the most reliable — it does not depend on your internet connection at all during installation.

When to Call a Professional

SU-30696-4 is not a hardware issue — no repair is needed. If your internet is consistently too unstable for downloads, contact your internet provider. Alternatively, you can always install updates via a USB drive downloaded from Sony's website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to update my PS4 to keep using it?

You do not need the update to play offline games or use local apps. However, Sony requires your PS4 to be on the latest firmware to access PSN, play online, or use the PlayStation Store. Some new games also require a minimum system software version to run.

How long does a PS4 system update take to download?

It depends on your internet speed and the update size. Small updates (under 500 MB) take a few minutes on fast connections. Large updates can take 20 to 60 minutes on average home broadband. Connecting via Ethernet cable significantly speeds up the download.

Can I schedule the update to download automatically overnight?

Yes. Go to Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Automatic Downloads. Your PS4 will download updates automatically while in Rest Mode.
