SU-41874-3

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

SU-41874-3 means your PlayStation could not complete a system software update. This usually happens because the download was interrupted or the update file is corrupted. Your console is still usable, but you may not be able to go online until the update is installed.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • The internet connection dropped while the update was downloading or installing
  • The downloaded update file became corrupted during the transfer
  • There is not enough free space on the hard drive to complete the update installation
  • A problem with PSN servers caused the update download to fail partway through
  • The USB drive used for a manual update contains the wrong or incomplete update file

How to Fix It

  1. Delete the failed update. Go to Notifications on the PS4 home screen, find the failed update, press Options, and select Delete.

Keeping the failed partial download can prevent a fresh download from starting correctly.

  2. Check your available storage space. Go to Settings > Storage > System Storage. Updates need some free space to install — at least 2 to 5 GB is recommended.

If space is tight, delete some games or applications to free up room before retrying the update.

  3. Restart the PS4 and your router, then attempt the update again. Go to Settings > System Software Update.

A fresh network connection reduces the chance of the download being interrupted again.

  4. Try downloading the update from Safe Mode. Turn the PS4 off, hold the power button for 7 seconds until two beeps, then connect a controller via USB and select Update System Software.

Safe Mode downloads a fresh copy of the update directly from Sony's servers, bypassing any corrupted cached data.

  5. As a last resort, perform a manual update via USB. Download the latest PS4 system software from playstation.com/update on a computer, copy it to a USB drive, and install it through Safe Mode.

The USB drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with the update file in a folder named PS4 > UPDATE.

When to Call a Professional

SU-41874-3 is a software problem and does not require a hardware repair. If you cannot install the update after trying all steps below, contact PlayStation Support at playstation.com/support. Sony support can walk you through a manual update via USB if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to update my PS4 to play online?

Yes. Sony requires the latest system software to access PlayStation Network and play online. If you decline the update, you can still play games offline on discs or previously downloaded titles. You cannot access the PlayStation Store or online multiplayer until the update is installed.

What should the USB drive folder structure look like for a manual update?

On the USB drive, create a folder called PS4 (all capitals). Inside that folder, create another folder called UPDATE (all capitals). Place the update file — named PS4UPDATE.PUP — inside the UPDATE folder. The full path should look like: USB:/PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP.

Will a failed update damage my PS4?

No. A failed update does not cause permanent damage. The PS4 is designed to recover gracefully from interrupted or failed updates. Your games, saves, and settings are not affected by a failed system update.
