SU-42118-7

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

SU-42118-7 means your PlayStation 4 could not complete a system software update. The update either failed to download properly or could not be installed. This does not mean your console is broken — it is a software issue that can usually be fixed without losing any data.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • The update file downloaded incompletely due to an internet interruption
  • There is not enough free space on the hard drive to install the update
  • The USB drive used for manual updates is not formatted correctly (must be FAT32)
  • A corrupted file from a previous failed update attempt is blocking the new one
  • The PS4's internal hard drive has errors that prevent writing the update files

How to Fix It

  1. Delete the failed update and try again. Go to Notifications (the speech bubble icon on the home screen), find the failed update notification, press Options, and delete it. Then go to Settings > System Software Update and try again.

Partial update files often cause SU-42118-7. Deleting the failed file and starting fresh usually resolves it.

  2. Check available storage. Go to Settings > Storage > System Storage. You need several gigabytes free. Delete old games or screenshots if space is tight.

PS4 system updates can be 500 MB to 1.5 GB in size. The console also needs working space during installation.

  3. Try the update in Safe Mode. Turn the PS4 fully off, then hold the power button for 7 seconds until you hear a second beep. In Safe Mode, select Update System Software > Update via Internet.

Safe Mode loads a minimal version of the system, which can bypass issues that block updates in normal mode.

  4. Try a manual USB update. Download the PS4 update file from Sony's website on a computer. Save it to a USB drive formatted as FAT32, inside a folder called PS4 > UPDATE. Insert the USB, enter Safe Mode, and select Update via USB.

The folder names must be in CAPITAL LETTERS: PS4 and UPDATE. The file name must be PS4UPDATE.PUP exactly.

  5. Rebuild the database from Safe Mode. In Safe Mode (same process as above), select Rebuild Database instead of updating. Once finished, try the update again normally.

Rebuilding the database clears corrupted system entries that can block software updates from installing.

When to Call a Professional

SU-42118-7 is almost always fixable at home. If your PS4 gets stuck in a boot loop after a failed update and Safe Mode does not help, contact Sony Support. A Sony-authorised repair centre can reflash the system software without losing your saved data in most cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to update my PS4 — can I just skip the update?

You can skip updates if you only want to play offline. However, many games require the latest system software to run, and you cannot access PlayStation Network without being on the current version. Most people find the update is necessary for normal use.

Will a factory reset fix this error?

A factory reset (Initialize PS4) will almost certainly fix this error, but it deletes all data on the console. Only use Initialize PS4 as a last resort, after trying Safe Mode and USB update methods. Always back up your saved data to a USB drive first.

How do I format a USB drive to FAT32 for a PS4 update?

On Windows, plug in the USB drive, right-click it in File Explorer, and choose Format. In the File System dropdown, select FAT32, then click Start. Note: Windows cannot format drives larger than 32 GB as FAT32 using the built-in tool. Use a free tool like Rufus for larger drives.
