SU-42690-5

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

SU-42690-5 means your PS4's system software update could not be completed. The update file may have been corrupted during download, or the console does not have enough free space to install it. Deleting the failed update and trying again — or updating via USB — usually works.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • The update file was corrupted or only partially downloaded
  • There is not enough free space on the hard drive for the update to install
  • The internet connection dropped while the update was downloading
  • A system file needed by the update process has become corrupted
  • The PS4's hard drive is beginning to fail, causing write errors during installation

How to Fix It

  1. Delete the failed update file. Go to Notifications > Downloads, find the system update, press Options, and select Delete. Then go to Settings > System Software Update and try downloading the update again on a stable internet connection.

A fresh download is almost always cleaner than trying to resume a corrupted one.

  2. Free up space on your hard drive before updating. Go to Settings > Storage > System Storage. The system update needs several gigabytes of free space. Delete games or applications you no longer need.

PS4 system updates can be 1–5 GB. If your drive is nearly full, the update cannot install.

  3. Update via USB drive as a reliable alternative. On a computer, format a USB drive to FAT32, create a folder called 'PS4', then inside it create another folder called 'UPDATE'. Download the latest PS4 update file from PlayStation's official website and name it 'PS4UPDATE.PUP'. Copy it to the UPDATE folder, plug the USB into your PS4, then go to Settings > System Software Update.

The USB method bypasses your internet connection entirely and is the most reliable way to update.

  4. If the update still fails, try it in Safe Mode. Turn off the PS4 fully, hold the power button for 7 seconds until it beeps twice, then select 'Update System Software' from Safe Mode. You can update from the internet or via USB in this mode.

Safe Mode disables background processes that might interfere with the update.

  5. Rebuild the PS4 database in Safe Mode before attempting the update again. Boot into Safe Mode, select 'Rebuild Database', let it finish, then try the update. Database corruption can prevent updates from installing.

Rebuilding the database does not delete any games or saved data.

When to Call a Professional

SU-42690-5 is usually fixable at home using the USB update method. If the USB update also fails repeatedly, the hard drive may be failing. In that case, contact Sony Support or a repair shop — a failing drive needs to be replaced before it causes bigger problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to update my PS4 to play games?

You do not need the latest update to play offline games. However, many online games and features require the latest system software. If you want to access PSN, the PlayStation Store, or play online, keeping the system updated is necessary.

Where do I download the official PS4 update file for USB installation?

Go to PlayStation's official support website and search for 'PS4 system software update'. Look for the section called 'Reinstallation file' or 'Update file' — make sure you download the full update, not just the incremental one. The file should be named PS4UPDATE.PUP.

Will updating my PS4 delete my saved games?

No. System software updates do not delete saved games or installed applications. However, it is always good practice to back up saves before any major system operation. Go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management to back up to USB or PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
