Microsoft Xbox
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Error 0x803F9008 means the game or feature you are trying to use requires an active Xbox subscription. You either need Xbox Live Gold (for online multiplayer) or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Your subscription has expired, or you are trying to play a Game Pass game without an active membership.
Affected Models
- Xbox One
- Xbox One S
- Xbox One X
- Xbox Series S
- Xbox Series X
Common Causes
- Your Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate subscription has expired
- You are trying to play a Game Pass game that you do not own and have no active Game Pass membership
- A free trial ended and the console is now asking for a paid subscription
- You are signed in on a different profile that does not have an active subscription
- Your payment method for the subscription failed and the membership was not renewed
How to Fix It
-
Check your subscription status. Press the Xbox button, go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Subscriptions. You will see all active and expired subscriptions listed here.
This is the fastest way to confirm whether your subscription has lapsed.
-
Renew your subscription. On your Xbox, go to the Microsoft Store > Search for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Xbox Live Gold > select Subscribe. Or renew at xbox.com on a computer or phone.
Game Pass Ultimate combines Xbox Live Gold, Game Pass for console and PC, and EA Play in one subscription.
-
Check which account is signed in. Press the Xbox button and look at the top-left of the menu to confirm which account is active. Make sure it is the account that holds the subscription.
If you have multiple accounts on the console, it is easy to accidentally be signed in on the wrong one.
-
Check your payment method. Go to Settings > Account > Subscriptions > select the subscription > Manage. Check that your payment method is valid and has not expired.
If a subscription failed to auto-renew due to a payment failure, you will need to update your card details and renew manually.
-
Set your console as your Home Xbox. Go to Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox. If this console is set as Home Xbox for the account with the subscription, other profiles on the same console can also access it.
The Home Xbox setting allows subscription benefits to be shared with anyone who uses that console.
When to Call a Professional
Error 0x803F9008 is a subscription issue, not a hardware or software fault. No repair is needed. If you believe your subscription is active and you are still seeing this error, contact Xbox Support at support.xbox.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Xbox Live Gold to play all games online?
Most online multiplayer games require Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate. However, free-to-play games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Warzone do not require Gold — they are free to play online. Check the Xbox Store page for the specific game to see its online play requirements.
What is the difference between Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate?
Xbox Live Gold gives you online multiplayer access and monthly free games. Game Pass Ultimate includes everything in Gold, plus access to a library of hundreds of games to download and play at no extra cost. Most players find Game Pass Ultimate the better value since it costs only a little more than Gold.
If my Game Pass expires, do I lose the games I downloaded?
Yes. Game Pass games can only be played while your subscription is active. If your subscription expires, the games are locked until you renew. Any games you purchased outright (not through Game Pass) are unaffected and will still work.
