Disc Not Reading / Unrecognised Disc

Microsoft Xbox Console

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

An Xbox that won't read discs is most often caused by a dirty disc, the disc being inserted label-side down, or a disc drive that needs a firmware update. Cleaning the disc and restarting the console fixes the majority of cases.

Affected Models

  • Xbox Series X
  • Xbox One X
  • Xbox One S
  • Xbox One

Common Causes

  • Disc dirty, scratched, or smudged
  • Disc inserted upside down
  • Disc drive firmware out of date — update required for new game discs
  • Disc drive laser dirty or worn
  • Disc format not supported — DVD, Blu-ray, or region mismatch
  • Drive mechanism damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the disc.

Hold the disc by its edges and inspect both sides. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe from the centre hole outward to the edge in straight lines — never in circular motions. Use clean water or a dedicated disc cleaning spray. Do not use paper towels or rough cloths — they cause micro-scratches.

  2. Insert the disc correctly.

On Xbox Series X and Xbox One X (vertical orientation), insert the disc with the label facing left when the console is vertical. For horizontal orientation, label faces up. Inserting the disc label-side toward the drive laser is a very common mistake that causes immediate 'unrecognised disc' errors.

  3. Restart the console and reinsert the disc.

Press and hold the Xbox button on the controller → Restart Console. After restart, insert the disc with the console fully loaded (wait for the dashboard to appear before inserting). A restart clears the disc drive cache and resolves many temporary read errors.

  4. Update the console and disc drive firmware.

Some new game discs require an updated disc drive firmware to be read. Settings → System → Updates → Update Console. Ensure the console is fully up to date. Note: disc drive firmware is updated as part of the Xbox system update — there is no separate disc firmware download needed.

  5. Test with a different disc.

Try a different game disc or a Blu-ray movie. If the drive reads one disc but not another, the problem is with the specific disc (scratched, region mismatch). If no disc works at all, the drive laser is dirty or worn — this requires professional service or drive replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix a scratched Xbox disc?

Light surface scratches on a disc can sometimes be polished out with a disc repair kit (available online for around £10–£20) — they use a fine abrasive to level the scratch. Deep scratches through the data layer cannot be repaired. For scratched discs, it is worth trying the disc at a game rental shop or library that has a disc polishing machine before giving up on it. Digital copies of games are immune to this problem — consider going digital for games you play frequently.
