Network Error / Can't Connect to Xbox Live

Microsoft Xbox Console

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Xbox network errors are most often caused by your router needing a restart, the Xbox using a Wi-Fi signal that is too weak, or Xbox Live servers having a temporary outage. Check the Xbox Live status first, then restart your router.

Affected Models

  • Xbox Series X
  • Xbox Series S
  • Xbox One X
  • Xbox One S
  • Xbox One

Common Causes

  • Xbox Live service outage
  • Router DHCP lease expired
  • Wi-Fi signal too weak for stable online gaming
  • DNS server issues
  • Router NAT type set to Strict — blocking some Xbox connections
  • Xbox MAC address blocked by router firewall

How to Fix It

  1. Check Xbox Live service status.

Go to support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-live-status on your phone or computer. If Xbox Live services are listed as degraded or experiencing issues, this is a Microsoft-side problem — wait and try again later. Xbox also posts service status updates on their official Twitter/X account.

  2. Restart the router and the Xbox.

Hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds to shut down. Unplug the router for 30 seconds and plug back in. Wait 60 seconds for the router to fully reconnect. Turn the Xbox back on and test the network connection: Settings → General → Network Settings → Test network connection.

  3. Switch to a wired Ethernet connection.

Wi-Fi is convenient but introduces latency and packet loss that can trigger network errors. Connect an Ethernet cable from the Xbox directly to the router or a LAN port. This eliminates Wi-Fi as a variable and provides the most reliable Xbox Live connection.

  4. Change the DNS server.

Settings → General → Network Settings → Advanced Settings → DNS Settings → Manual. Set Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and Secondary DNS to 8.8.4.4 (Google), or 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare). ISP DNS servers can be slow or unreliable for gaming traffic.

  5. Check and improve NAT type.

Settings → General → Network Settings — your NAT type is shown here. NAT Type Open = ideal for online gaming. NAT Type Moderate = most features work, some peer connections may fail. NAT Type Strict = significant limitations — multiplayer and party chat often break. To improve NAT type, enable UPnP in your router settings or set up port forwarding for Xbox Live (TCP 3074, UDP 3074, UDP 3544, UDP 4500).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NAT type and why does it matter for Xbox?

NAT (Network Address Translation) type describes how your router handles incoming and outgoing network connections for your Xbox. Open NAT means the router allows free two-way communication — best for multiplayer. Moderate NAT works for most games but can prevent some peer-to-peer connections. Strict NAT blocks most inbound connections and causes problems with multiplayer, party chat, and game invites. Enabling UPnP in your router settings (usually found in the Advanced or NAT section) typically upgrades Strict or Moderate NAT to Open automatically.
