Will Not Close
Genie Garage Door Opener
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If the Genie opener courtesy light flashes when you press close, the Safe-T-Beam safety sensors are detecting an obstruction or misalignment. Clear obstructions, realign the sensors, and the door will close normally.
How to Fix It
-
Watch the courtesy light on the motor head when you press the wall button to close. Repeated flashing is the Genie signal that the safety sensors will not allow the door to close.
-
Walk the path between the two Safe-T-Beam sensors. Look for anything that might break the invisible beam — a child's toy, a car bumper, a recycling bin, or even tall grass at the edge of the garage door.
-
Check both Safe-T-Beam LEDs. The receiver should glow steady green. If it is off, the beam is broken; if it is blinking, the sensors are misaligned.
-
Loosen the receiver bracket and gently tilt the sensor up, down, left, and right until the green LED glows steadily, then re-tighten the bracket.
-
If both LEDs are solid but the door still flashes and reverses, the close-limit switch may be set incorrectly. Locate the limit adjustment screws on the motor head and consult your manual to recalibrate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many flashes from the courtesy light is a Safe-T-Beam alarm?
Genie does not use a precise flash count. The light typically flashes for several seconds when close is denied — distinct from the slow on-off pattern during normal operation.
Can I close the door manually if Safe-T-Beam keeps blocking?
Yes — hold the wall button continuously down (deadman mode). The door closes only while you hold the button. Use this for emergency situations only and fix the sensor issue immediately afterwards.
What if I do not have any visible obstruction but the sensors say there is one?
Sometimes morning dew, frost, or condensation forms on a sensor lens and breaks the beam. Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth. Spider webs (very thin and almost invisible) are also common culprits — wipe and check again.
