Learn Button
LiftMaster Garage Door Opener
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
If the LiftMaster learn button does not seem to work, you may be pressing the wrong button, holding it for the wrong duration, or the receiver memory may be full. Pressing learn for 6 seconds clears all remotes — useful as a hard reset.
How to Fix It
-
Locate the learn button on the back of the LiftMaster motor head, near the antenna. The button is usually purple, yellow, red, orange, or green depending on year and frequency.
-
To pair a new remote: press and release the learn button (do not hold). The learn LED next to it lights up for 30 seconds. While lit, press the button on your remote until the opener clicks or the courtesy light flashes.
-
If the LED does not light when you press learn, the button itself or the receiver board may have failed. Check that the colour of the learn button on your opener matches the remote you are trying to pair (e.g. yellow learn button works with yellow learn remotes).
-
If you have many old remotes paired and run out of memory slots, hold the learn button for 6 seconds. This erases all remotes from memory. You can then re-pair only the ones you want to keep.
-
If the receiver works for the wall control but no remote will pair, the receiver antenna (a long thin wire hanging from the opener) may be broken or moved. Make sure it hangs down and is not tucked into the opener body.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell which colour learn button I have without a ladder?
Take a photo of the back of the opener with your phone using flash. The learn button is the only coloured button near the antenna wire. Compare colours with your remote — yellow remotes work with yellow learn buttons, etc.
Can I pair a remote from a different brand to a LiftMaster opener?
Many brands use compatible Security+ 2.0 (yellow) or Security+ (orange/red) protocols and will pair across brands. Genie remotes generally do not pair with LiftMaster, but Chamberlain remotes do (same parent company).
How many remotes can a LiftMaster opener remember?
Most modern LiftMaster openers remember up to 64 remotes. If you keep replacing remotes without erasing memory, you may eventually fill the slots. The 6-second learn button hold clears all and starts fresh.
