Will Not Close

LiftMaster Garage Door Opener

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If the door opens but will not close from the remote or wall button, the safety sensors are the most likely cause. Check the sensor LEDs and clear any obstruction. The door will still close from the wall button held continuously down — but not from the remote.

How to Fix It

  1. Look at the two photo-eye sensors at the bottom of the door tracks. Both LEDs should glow steadily — one amber (sending), one green (receiving). A flickering or off LED indicates the cause.

  2. Clear any obstruction between the sensors — boxes, bicycles, garden hoses, or even cobwebs can break the beam. Wipe both lenses with a clean cloth.

  3. If the LEDs are off, the wiring is faulty or the sensor has failed. Check the terminal connections at the opener and inspect the wires for damage.

  4. If the LEDs are on but the door still will not close, check the close-limit setting. The opener may think the door is already closed. Locate the limit adjustment screws on the back of the opener and adjust per your manual.

  5. Try holding the wall button continuously while the door closes. If it closes this way (in deadman mode), the sensor circuit is suspect. If it still will not close even held down, the close-limit or close-force adjustment is wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

The opener light flashes 10 times when I press close — what does that mean?

10 flashes from the courtesy light (not the diagnostic LED on the back) is the LiftMaster signal that the safety sensors are blocked or misaligned. Realign the sensors or clear the obstruction.

Can cold weather make the door fail to close?

Yes. Cold-stiffened lubricant on the door rollers and hinges increases the force needed to close. The opener may sense this as an obstruction and reverse. Lubricate with a garage-door-specific spray for cold weather.

What is the LiftMaster Lock Mode and how do I tell if it is on?

Lock Mode disables remotes (but not the wall button) and is enabled by holding the LOCK button on the wall control for 2 seconds. The wall control LED flashes when locked. Press LOCK again to disable.
