Not Charging

Phonak Hearing Aid

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Phonak rechargeable aids that are not charging usually have dirty contacts, a charger that has lost power, or aids not properly seated in the charger. Look for the LED indicators on the charger to confirm charging.

Affected Models

  • Phonak Audeo Lumity R
  • Phonak Audeo Paradise R
  • Phonak Audeo Marvel R
  • Phonak Audeo Sphere R
  • Phonak Naida P-R

Common Causes

  • Charger contacts on aids or charger have wax or dirt
  • Aids not seated correctly in the charger cradle
  • Charger USB cable not delivering power
  • Charger placed in a power-saving USB port that switches off
  • Internal lithium battery degraded after 3+ years of use

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the contacts.

Wipe the metal contacts on the aid (back of each aid) and the matching pins in the charger with a soft, dry cloth. Wax and skin oils accumulate and prevent good electrical contact.

  2. Verify the aids are seated correctly.

Place each aid in its labeled side of the charger. The charger LEDs should illuminate when an aid is properly seated. If no LEDs light, the aid is not making contact — adjust position.

  3. Check charger power.

Verify the LED on the charger glows when no aids are present. If off, the USB cable or power source has failed. Try a different USB-A wall charger (do not use a tablet's high-current charger if not specified).

  4. Avoid power-saving USB ports.

Many laptops and some power strips have USB ports that turn off after a delay. Use a wall outlet adapter rather than a laptop USB port to ensure reliable overnight charging.

  5. Test internal battery age (3+ year aids).

If your aids used to last 24 hours and now barely make 8, the lithium cell has degraded. Your audiologist can replace the cell — the aid does not need to be replaced.

When to Call a Professional

If charger and contacts are clean and the aid still does not charge, the internal battery has likely degraded. Phonak audiologists can replace the lithium-ion cell in clinic — typically a single-visit service.
