Whistling Feedback
Phonak Hearing Aid
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Whistling on Phonak hearing aids is acoustic feedback — sound leaking back into the microphone. Most common causes are a poorly fitting dome, earwax buildup, or a degraded wax filter.
Affected Models
- Phonak Audeo Lumity
- Phonak Audeo Paradise
- Phonak Audeo Marvel
- Phonak Audeo Sphere
- Phonak Naida
Common Causes
- Dome too small or worn out — sound leaks around it
- Earwax buildup in the ear canal reflecting sound back
- Volume turned up too high
- Aid microphone or vent partially blocked by hair or hat
- Receiver tube cracked or loose connection
How to Fix It
-
Check the dome fit.
The soft dome at the end of the receiver tube should sit snugly in your ear canal. If the dome falls out easily or you feel air around it, request a larger dome size from your audiologist.
-
Have your ears checked for wax.
Even a small amount of wax causes feedback. Visit your audiologist or doctor for an ear check. Do not use cotton buds — they push wax deeper into the canal.
-
Replace the wax filter.
Phonak aids have a tiny CeruShield disk on the receiver tip. Replace it using the dispenser tool that came with your aids. A blocked filter changes acoustics and contributes to feedback.
-
Lower the volume in the app.
Open myPhonak and reduce volume by 1-2 steps. If the whistling stops, the aid is amplifying beyond your current fit's tolerance. Your audiologist can adjust this in Target software.
-
Run a feedback test at your audiologist.
Phonak's Target software includes an in-ear feedback test that measures your unique ear canal acoustics. This is essential after any change in dome size, fit, or wax buildup.
When to Call a Professional
If domes and cleaning do not stop persistent whistling, your audiologist can refit a different size, run a feedback test in Phonak Target software, or replace the receiver tube.
