F3

Blue Star Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F3 on a Blue Star AC means the outdoor temperature sensor (thermistor) has detected a fault or is reading outside its normal range. This sensor monitors outdoor ambient conditions so the system can operate safely and efficiently. The compressor will not run while F3 is active.

Affected Models

  • Blue Star Inverter Split AC (all capacities)
  • Blue Star 3 Star Inverter
  • Blue Star 5 Star Inverter
  • Blue Star FS Series
  • Blue Star IC Series Inverter

Common Causes

  • Outdoor thermistor failed — resistance reading outside the expected range
  • Thermistor wire damaged by weather exposure or sharp contact inside the outdoor unit
  • Connector at the outdoor PCB loose or moisture-corroded
  • Thermistor probe not seated correctly on the coil or ambient air channel
  • Outdoor PCB failure causing incorrect interpretation of sensor data

How to Fix It

  1. Switch the AC off at the remote and cut power at the circuit breaker.

Wait 5 minutes before restoring power.

  2. Restore power and restart. If F3 clears, monitor for recurrence.

A one-time F3 after a power fluctuation may not return. If F3 reappears within 10 minutes of starting, the sensor needs service.

  3. Ensure the outdoor unit has clear ventilation on all sides.

At least 30-50 cm clearance is needed. An obstructed outdoor unit can cause abnormal temperature readings that trigger sensor faults.

  4. Call Blue Star service (1800-209-1177) and book a technician visit.

Have the model number ready — it is on the sticker on the indoor unit's right side panel.

When to Call a Professional

F3 requires a Blue Star authorised service technician. Blue Star service helpline: 1800-209-1177. A technician will check thermistor resistance and wiring integrity and replace the sensor if required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Blue Star F3 mean the entire outdoor unit needs replacing?

No — F3 almost never means the outdoor unit needs replacing. The thermistor sensor itself is a small and inexpensive component. In most cases, only the sensor (and sometimes just its connector) needs to be replaced or reseated.

How do I find my Blue Star AC model number?

Look on the sticker on the right side of the indoor unit — usually near the bottom. The model number starts with letters like IC, FS, or similar. You will need this number when booking service and when ordering parts.
