C5

Universal HVAC System

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

HVAC error code C5 indicates a problem with the indoor unit's swing motor or louver flap. The horizontal airflow louvers (the flaps that direct airflow up and down) are not moving correctly. This is usually caused by a stuck, jammed, or disconnected swing motor.

Affected Models

  • Mitsubishi mini-splits
  • Daikin mini-splits
  • Fujitsu mini-splits
  • Generic mini-splits
  • Multi-zone indoor units

Common Causes

  • The swing motor mechanism is jammed by debris or an object blocking the louver
  • The swing motor has failed and is no longer turning the louver flap
  • The louver flap became physically disconnected from the motor shaft
  • The wiring harness to the swing motor is loose or disconnected
  • The indoor unit's main control board has a fault affecting the swing motor circuit

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the unit off. Manually inspect the louver flap at the bottom of the indoor unit. Look for any objects — coins, toys, small items — that may be wedged in the louver mechanism.

Small objects that fall into the unit from below are a surprisingly common cause of louver jams. Check carefully with a flashlight.

  2. Gently try to move the louver flap by hand when the unit is off. It should pivot smoothly. If it feels stuck or grinds, something is mechanically obstructing it.

Do not force the flap. If it feels very stiff, there may be a broken gear or motor. Let a technician handle further disassembly.

  3. Turn the unit off at the breaker for 5 minutes, then restore power and restart. A full power reset sometimes clears a false C5 error caused by a temporary motor stall.

A brief motor stall during startup can trigger C5 without a real hardware fault. A power cycle allows the motor to reinitialize.

  4. Check the filter area. A clogged or incorrectly seated air filter can physically obstruct the louver. Remove the filters, inspect them, clean them if needed, and reinstall correctly.

Filters that are pushed too far in or are the wrong size can interfere with the louver mechanism.

  5. If C5 persists after all checks, call an HVAC technician. They will access the unit's internal components, test the swing motor with a multimeter, and replace it if needed.

A swing motor is an inexpensive part (typically $20–$60) but installation requires opening the indoor unit casing.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning and basic inspection do not resolve C5, an HVAC technician can replace the swing motor. Swing motor replacement is a relatively affordable repair. Always have a technician handle internal component access on an AC unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use the AC with a C5 error?

Sometimes the unit will still cool or heat with C5, but the louver will not swing. Air will only blow in one fixed direction. For most people, this is usable short-term while waiting for a repair. However, if the unit completely shuts down on C5, do not try to override it.

How much does a swing motor replacement cost?

The swing motor part itself typically costs $20–$60 depending on the brand. Labor to replace it is usually 30–60 minutes of technician time. Total repair cost is typically $100–$200. This is a routine, affordable repair.

Can I manually position the louver if the motor fails?

Yes — when the unit is off, you can manually set the louver to a fixed position. Most louvers can be held in place by their shape even without the motor running. This is not a permanent fix, but it lets you use the unit while waiting for the motor to be replaced.
