E1
Carrier Split AC
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E1 on a Carrier AC means the indoor unit and outdoor unit have lost communication. The two units exchange signals continuously through a communication wire — when this link is broken, E1 appears and the system stops. This is often caused by a wiring fault, a power issue at one of the units, or a PCB fault.
Affected Models
- Carrier Ester Plus
- Carrier Superia Plus
- Carrier Durafresh Neo
- Carrier Inverter Split AC (all models)
- Carrier CAI series
Common Causes
- Communication wire between indoor and outdoor unit broken, disconnected, or shorted
- Outdoor unit not receiving power — tripped breaker, blown fuse, or damaged power cable
- Indoor PCB fault — not transmitting the communication signal correctly
- Outdoor PCB fault — not receiving or responding to the communication signal
- Interference from nearby electrical equipment disrupting the communication signal
How to Fix It
-
Check that both the indoor unit and outdoor unit have power.
Look at the outdoor unit — are any indicator lights on? A completely dark outdoor unit has lost power. Check the dedicated circuit breaker for the outdoor unit.
-
Switch off power at the circuit breaker for both units. Wait 5 minutes and restore power.
A power reset clears transient communication errors. If E1 does not return, monitor over the next few cycles.
-
Inspect the communication cable between the indoor and outdoor unit at both connection points.
The communication cable connects to terminals on both the indoor and outdoor unit PCBs. Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends and there is no visible damage to the cable.
-
If E1 persists, call Carrier service — a technician will trace and test the communication circuit.
Do not attempt to bypass or splice the communication cable — incorrect wiring can damage both PCBs.
When to Call a Professional
E1 requires a technician to trace the communication wiring and test both PCBs. Communication wire faults between indoor and outdoor units can be in the cable itself or at either PCB connector. Carrier India: 1800-103-9999.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a power cut cause Carrier E1?
Yes — a sudden power cut sometimes causes the indoor and outdoor units to lose sync when power is restored. Switch off the circuit breaker, wait 5 minutes, and restore power to allow both units to restart and re-establish communication. If E1 returns regularly after power outages, the communication cable or a PCB may be marginal and worth having inspected.
