F6

Electrolux Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The outdoor unit has become too hot and triggered a safety shutdown. The condenser coil cannot release heat fast enough to keep the system running safely. Cleaning the outdoor unit and improving ventilation usually resolves this.

Affected Models

  • Electrolux EXH09HL1W
  • Electrolux EXH12HL1W
  • Electrolux ESV09CRK
  • Electrolux EWHI09
  • Electrolux Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Dirty or blocked outdoor condenser fins coated in dirt, dust, or debris
  • Outdoor unit installed with insufficient clearance on one or more sides
  • Outdoor fan motor running slowly or failed, reducing airflow through the coil
  • Extremely high ambient outdoor temperature on very hot days
  • Low refrigerant causing the compressor to generate excess heat in the outdoor unit

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the AC off at the remote and wall breaker, then go outside to inspect the outdoor unit.

Let the outdoor unit cool for at least 20 minutes before attempting a restart.

  2. Clear all debris — leaves, grass, dirt — from around the outdoor unit.

Ensure at least 50 cm of clearance around all sides and 1 metre above the unit.

  3. Gently rinse the condenser coil fins with a garden hose on a low-pressure setting.

Spray from inside the unit outward where possible to push dirt out through the fins.

  4. Check that the outdoor fan spins freely and starts immediately when the unit is switched on.

A slow-starting or noisy outdoor fan motor needs professional attention.

  5. If outdoor temperatures are extremely high today, wait until the cooler evening hours to restart.

Some F6 errors are simply caused by peak summer heat — the unit may run fine in cooler conditions.

When to Call a Professional

If F6 returns after cleaning the outdoor unit and improving airflow, call a technician. A failed outdoor fan motor requires professional replacement. Low refrigerant as the root cause must be handled by a licensed technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the outdoor unit of my Electrolux AC?

Clean the outdoor condenser fins at least once per year, ideally before summer begins. If you live near trees, dusty roads, or industrial areas, clean it every 3–6 months. Regular cleaning prevents F6 and keeps running costs down.

Can I shade my outdoor unit to prevent F6 in summer?

Yes — shading the unit from direct sun can reduce ambient temperature around the condenser. Use a purpose-built louvred shade cover that allows airflow, not an enclosed box. Never block any side of the outdoor unit — airflow is essential.

My outdoor fan makes a grinding noise. Is that related to F6?

Yes — a failing outdoor fan bearing causes the fan to slow down, reducing condenser airflow. This leads to overheating and F6. Switch the AC off until the fan motor is replaced to avoid damaging the compressor.
