L3

Electrolux Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

L3 means the outdoor condenser fan motor is not working correctly. Without the outdoor fan, heat cannot be expelled and the system overheats. Check for obstructions at the outdoor unit before calling a technician.

Affected Models

  • Electrolux EXH09HL1W
  • Electrolux EXH12HL1W
  • Electrolux ESV09CRK
  • Electrolux EWHI09
  • Electrolux Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Fan blade blocked by leaves, debris, or ice build-up
  • Seized outdoor DC fan motor with worn bearings
  • Faulty fan motor capacitor (if applicable to the model)
  • Loose or damaged wiring between the outdoor fan motor and the PCB
  • Failed outdoor control board no longer sending the correct signal to the fan motor

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the AC at the remote and switch off the circuit breaker.

The outdoor fan blade can spin unexpectedly — never reach into the outdoor unit with power on.

  2. Go to the outdoor unit and visually inspect the fan through the top grille.

Look for leaves, twigs, plastic bags, or anything jammed against the fan blade.

  3. If you can see an obstruction through the grille, carefully remove it with a stick or gloved hand.

Do not reach through the grille if you cannot see clearly — call a technician instead.

  4. Check that the outdoor unit has at least 50 cm of clear space on all sides.

Poor airflow around the unit can cause the fan to overwork and eventually fail.

  5. Restore power and restart the AC — watch whether the outdoor fan starts spinning.

You should be able to feel air coming out of the top of the outdoor unit within 30 seconds.

  6. If the fan does not spin or L3 returns immediately, call a licensed HVAC technician.

A seized motor or PCB fault requires professional diagnosis and parts replacement.

When to Call a Professional

Call a technician if clearing visible obstructions does not resolve L3. Outdoor fan motor replacement involves working inside the outdoor unit near high-voltage components. Only a licensed HVAC technician should open the outdoor unit and replace parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can L3 be caused by cold weather?

In very cold conditions, ice can form on the outdoor unit and block the fan blade. Most Electrolux inverter ACs have a defrost cycle to handle this automatically. If ice is visible, let the unit defrost naturally before restarting.

How long does an outdoor fan motor last?

Outdoor fan motors typically last 8–12 years with regular maintenance. Dirty condenser coils make the motor work harder and shorten its lifespan. Annual cleaning of the outdoor unit helps the motor last as long as possible.

Will L3 damage the compressor if ignored?

Yes — without the outdoor fan working, heat builds up rapidly in the outdoor unit. The compressor will overheat and trigger additional protection codes (like H5). Leave the AC off and arrange a repair before running it again.
