F1

Gree Air Conditioner

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

F1 on a Gree air conditioner means refrigerant pressure on the low side has dropped below the safe minimum. The system has shut down to protect the compressor. Do not restart until the cause is identified.

Affected Models

  • Gree Sapphire
  • Gree Fairy
  • Gree Lomo
  • Gree U-Crown
  • Gree split AC units

Common Causes

  • Refrigerant leak reducing the system charge
  • Dirty or blocked air filter severely restricting indoor airflow
  • Frozen evaporator coil blocking refrigerant flow
  • Faulty low-pressure sensor sending an incorrect reading
  • Expansion valve malfunction

How to Fix It

  1. Clean or replace the indoor air filter.

A heavily blocked filter chokes airflow across the evaporator coil. This causes the coil to freeze and refrigerant pressure to plummet. Remove and wash the filter under running water, dry it completely, and reinsert.

  2. Check if the indoor coil is frozen (covered in ice).

Turn off the compressor and run fan-only mode for 30-60 minutes to thaw the coil before restarting cooling. Do not run cooling again until all ice has melted — operating with a frozen coil will worsen the fault.

  3. Look for signs of a refrigerant leak around pipe connections.

Check the flared pipe connections at both the indoor and outdoor units for oily residue or frost spots, which indicate refrigerant escaping. A visible leak requires a certified HVAC technician to repair and recharge.

  4. Reset the unit and monitor closely.

Turn the unit off at the wall, wait 10 minutes, and restart. If F1 disappears and does not return within a few hours, the shutdown may have been triggered by a temporary condition such as a dirty filter, now resolved.

When to Call a Professional

Refrigerant recharge and leak repair require specialist tools and certification. Do not attempt to add refrigerant yourself — always hire a certified HVAC technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep running the AC when F1 is showing?

No. Running the compressor with low refrigerant pressure will damage or destroy the compressor, which is the most expensive component in the system. Keep the unit off until the fault is resolved.

How much does refrigerant recharge cost?

Costs vary by region and refrigerant type (R32 or R410A). Expect roughly $100-$400 USD including diagnosis, labour, and refrigerant. Always fix the leak first — topping up without fixing the leak is a temporary measure.
